Te Akau Tauranga Preview

Te Akau New Zealand has five horses racing on Friday 20 October at Tauranga.

As on Thursday 19 October the conditions were: fine and Dead4, rail out 8 metres. 1ml rain forecast midday to 6 p.m. race day.

2.17 p.m. R3 5 Icebomb (3 f Darci Brahma - Snowdonia) - Michael McNab; raced twice as a two-year-old, finishing third over 1000 metres on debut at Trentham, and second in the Phoenix Park Classic (Gr. 3, 1200m) at New Plymouth. She trialled on 26 September at Te Teko, outside leading stable-mate Royal Success (Savabeel) and kept up a bold gallop for third, and resumes from barrier eight in the $10,000 Maiden 3YO 1200 metres. She possesses good attributes and appears capable of a bold first up performance.

2.17 p.m. R3 12 Gris Dame (3 f Reliable Man - Double Babu) - Leith Innes; sustained a very good finish for third, at her only trial this time in, over 800 metres on Heavy10 at Avondale, and debuts in the $10,000 Maiden 3YO 1200 metres. Half-sister to dual Group One winner MacO'reilly (O'Reilly) and a granddaughter of 1000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) winner and Filly of the Year Plume (Crested Wave), she has inherited the grey colouring of her sire. A wide draw (14) makes it awkward, but she has the makings of a lovely filly over ground and should be finding the line solidly from off the pace.

3.27 p.m. R5 14 Mongolianconqueror (3 g Ocean Park - Queen Rania) - Opie Bosson; got back from a wide draw and staged a big finish for second (nose) in the Maiden 1600 metres on 4 October at Ruakaka, with blinkers on at just his second start, and again contests the $10,000 Maiden 1600 metres. Drawn wide (11), a genuine pace and drag into contention at the right time should make him very competitive.

4.39 p.m. R7 5 Wide Awake (4 g Savabeel - Kay's Awake) - Opie Bosson; was scratched off slow footing last Saturday at Matamata, to contest the $10,000 Rating 65 1600 metres. He had raced a touch below expectations over a mile on Slow9 at Te Rapa, having resumed with a top run for third on similar ground in the Rating 65 1400 metres on 2 September at Hastings. Drawn wide (11), with a tongue tie on, he was a Maiden winner over a mile on good ground in March and can certainly measure up to his opponents.

4.39 p.m. R7 14 Pure Savalina (4 m Savabeel - Catalina) - Cameron Lammas; finished back in the field on 6 October in the Rating 65 1400 metres at Te Rapa, and steps up in distance for the $10,000 Rating 65 1600 metres. Somewhat dictated by the draw (13) to race back in the field, hopefully she can be seen finishing off solidly.
