Gee it is windy at Te Akau Stud - no wonder Air New Zealand isn't flying!
About three times a day I go around the farm looking at all the yearlings we have bought - there are two that really take my eye and both happen to be fillies! Both have just a couple of shares now available in them and they are gorgeous girls - with pedigrees full of success - they stand to have great residual value down the track too.
Lot 439 is a Per Incanto/Not A Jaffa filly and gosh the new owners will have some fun naming her with her relations! In recent years I haven't bought a better filly. I am confident of that!
She was sold by Sam and Catriona Williams' Little Avondale Stud who told the media "she's a really athletic filly with a super walk and plenty of spunk about her. She's been a great filly to parade here (at Karaka) all week and she has absolutely thrived during the yearling prep. She is going to make a stunning type on the race track".
This filly's family is really on the move!
Our filly is out of Not A Jaffa who is a half sister to WERTHER who was Champion Horse of the Year and Champion Middle Distance Horse of the Year in Hong Kong in 2015-16 and Champion Stayer in 2016-17. He has earned prizemoney of over NZ$7 million! Not A Jaffa is also a half sister to six-time winner Gobstopper who won the 2017 New Zealand Cup by 3.5 lengths and has earned close to quater of a million dollars in stakes in New Zealand.
Our filly's grand-dam is the Zabeel mare Bagalollies who was 2015-16 Champion Broodmare of the Year in New Zealand, fending off some very hot competition.
This filly is a real character and we have called her "Candy" she loves showing off at all our visitors, a real social butterfly!
I would think that she would be ready to race as an autumn 2YO but her career will be developed with the Group 1 NZ 1000 Guineas' in mind. If this filly isn't an Oaks' filly then I will eat my hat! Last night I took Karyn down the road to see her and when I told her my high regard for her - plus she showed off in fine fashion for Karyn - she immediately took a share in her.

A 10% share is $29,800 +GST, a 5% share is $14,900 +GST - this includes sale expenses at cost and all veterinary and xray inspections.
The other filly that I really love is Lot 117 our Showcasing filly out of Colombelle - Colombelle is by Zabeel, who I just love seeing in a pedigree and she in turn is out of the Last Tycoon mare Our Riesling. This is a brilliant New Zealand family from Haunui Farm that Te Akau has had good success with before. We have called her "Poppy".
This filly is a streamlined, fast-looking filly that I could see running in the Karaka Million in January. She is certainly also one of the nicest fillies you would see and she too has a beautiful pedigree to would deliver future residual value when the time comes for her to retire and become a broodmare. You will find fabulous female Group winners such as Valpolicella, Vavasour, Pussy Willow and Pussy O'Reilly in this family.
Last night after driving around, I wondered to myself "why haven't the final shares in these two stunning fillies ben snapped up?" - then I looked up when our unbeaten Karaka Million winner Avantage was sold and remembered that she was the SECOND LAST to sell this time last year - so that was interesting!
