Te Akau Waipa Trials' Update

Te Akau Racing trainers Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards took horses to trial on Thursday 19 October at Waipa.

The weather obliged with clear blue skies and temperatures up to 17 degrees.
Weather: fine, Track: Good3 rail: out 9 metres

Heat 1 2YO 650 metres (½ a length, 5 lengths 36.5)

The Real Beel (2 f Savabeel - Ahna) - Danielle Johnson; balanced up to travel outside the leader, quickened to an advantage at the 200m and strong through the line.

Purchased by David Ellis for $110,000 from the draft of Waikato Stud at the 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale, from the famous family of Eight Carat (Pieces of Eight): Group One winners: Octagonal (Zabeel), Marquise (Gold and Ivory), Diamond Lover (Sticks and Stones), Mouawad (Zabeel) and Kaapstad (Sir Tristram). She is owned by Wayne and Jo-Anne Phillips. Her older brother Safeer, also purchased by Ellis, has already won in Singapore.

“This fourth dam in her pedigree is Eight Carat, the cornerstone for one of the best producing families that has ever been seen in New Zealand, and her residual value is immense.  You just cannot get a better pedigree than this. The stallions on the dam side are of the highest order and she is a beautiful filly,” Ellis said.

Heat 2 2YO 650 metres (1 lengths, 1 ¼ lengths 37.0)

2 g Burgundy - Meranti - Opie Bosson; worked across from the outside gate to track along with cover in third, swept up inside the 200m and strong the line in second.

Purchased as a yearling by David Ellis for $30,000 from the draft of Park Hill Stables at the 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock South Island Sale, from the family of second top 2001-02 Filly of the Year Lady Dehere (Dehere), he is owned by Mansoor Gandhi.   He shapes as a strong, running, two-year-old type.

Heat 11 Maiden 850 metres (long neck, 1 ¼ lengths 53.6)

3 g Reliable Man - Colheita - Opie Bosson; got back sixth of eight, six lengths nearing home turn, came widest and displayed a good action making ground to the line.

His dam Colheita (St. Petersburg), is a three-quarter sister to three times stakes' winner Chartreuse (St. Petersburg), Group One producer of 1000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) winner Platinum Witness (California Dane).

“It is a really good filly family and stems from one of Sir Peter Vela's mares, Imzadi, by Sir Tristram,” said co-breeder/owner Lynley Autridge. “The family went off the boil a little bit but then along came Chartreuse and then they all started winning again.”

Heat 12 Maiden 850 metres (head, 3 lengths 52.8)

Burlone (3 f Burgundy - Scicolone) - Opie Bosson; settled back after some jostling for positions, six lengths nearing home turn, tracked up behind runners and ran home solidly in tight quarters.  From a Galileo mare bred by Sir Peter Vela, this filly was bred by David Ellis & Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM and Jim Browne.

Heat 19 Maiden 1150 metres (1 ¼ lengths, head 1:09.8)

Full of Grace (3 g O'Reilly - Tuesday's Child) - Opie Bosson; travelled kindly into contention from the 600m, poking between runners on straightening and ran out a solid trial in fourth.

David Ellis purchased Full of Grace as a yearling for $110,000 at the 2016 NZB Premier Sale. Both Ellis and Cambridge Stud master Sir Patrick Hogan, who offered the colt for sale, loved him as a type and being out of a Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare felt he had the makings to train on as a three-year-old and older horse.  He is bred on the same cross as champion mare Silent Achiever (O'Reilly), from the family of champion stallion Redoute's Choice (Danehill).

Heat 20 Maiden 1150 metres (1 length, head 1:09.6)

Motivation (3 g Mastercraftsman - Tenacity) - Opie Bosson; received a cosy trail from barrier one, angled across heels into the clear rounding the home turn and quickened nicely in a compelling trial win.

Bred and owned by Christopher Grace QSM, his dam, Tenacity (Zabeel), won five races to 1400 metres and a half-sister to Wellington Cup (Gr. 2, 2400m) winner Graphic (Volkraad).

Heat 21 Maiden 1150 metres (¾ lengths, head 1:10.3)

Status Symbol (3 c Tavistock - Zsa Zsa Gabeel) - Danielle Johnson; was checked back to last soon after the start, seven lengths off pace nearing the home turn and although unable to make ground in the short straight he rounded off solidly through the line.

Owned by the Te Akau 2016 Breeding Syndicate (Mgr: Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM), Status Symbol was purchased by David Ellis for $460,000 from the draft of Cambridge Stud at the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale.  From a Zabeel mare, the cross with Tavistock has already left Victorian Derby (Gr. 1, 2500m) winning stallion Tarzino and has a high stakes' winners to runners ratio. The further he goes the better he is likely to become.

Heat 22 Maiden 1150 metres (2 ¼ lengths, neck 1:11.7)

Why Ports (3 f Roc de Cambes - Sweet Torque) - Opie Bosson; began smartly to situate in second and tracking the leader throughout she kept up a strong gallop to retain second.

Bred and owned by Ian Farrelly, her dam won four times up to 2170 metres and she appears a lovely staying filly in the making.

Heat 24 Maiden 1150 metres (4 lengths, 1 ¾ lengths 1:09.8)

3 f Fastnet Rock - Gipsy Countess - Opie Bosson; began well but posted three wide, up to second at the 500m and kept up a strong gallop to hold her position.

In training for breeder-owner Raffles Dancers (NZ), her Sadler's Wells dam won over 2400 metres in the UK and she has the attributes of a filly that in time will appreciate getting over ground.

Heat 25 Maiden 1150 metres (1 ¼ lengths, head 1:10.4)

3 f Cape Blanco - Singalong - Opie Bosson; worked to co-lead a competitive pace on the inner and kept up a resilient gallop for second.

Trained for breeder-owner Sir Patrick and Justine, Lady Hogan and a team of enthusiasts, her dam Singalong carried the famous Hogan colours to victory in the Hawkes Bay Guineas (Gr. 3, 1400m), Desert Gold Stakes (Gr. 3, 1500m), and Cambridge Stud Sir Tristram Fillies Classic (Gr. 2, 2000m).

Heat 26 Maiden 1150 metres (head, head 1:10.0)

3 g Rip Van Winkle - Vega Sicilia - Dennis Tan; settled last, commenced a wide run from the 600m and sustained his effort strongly into fifth.

Purchased by David Ellis for $110,000 at the 2016 NZB Premier Yearling Sale, from the draft of Pencarrow Stud, and owned by Ronald Lau.  His dam Vega Sicilia has already left three winners of 12 races, including Avondale Guineas (Gr. 2, 2100m) winner Valbuena (Darci Brahma) who has since won three races in Singapore.

Heat 27 Open 1150 metres (head, 3 lengths 1:10.0)

Heroic Valour (4 h Fastnet Rock - Myrrh) - Opie Bosson (below); was easy off a wide gate to tail six runners, improved around from the 600m, jogged up second around the home turn and held together once he established a winning margin.

Heroic Valour was the second top two-year-old of his year, when unbeaten in three starts including the Diamond Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) and Matamata Slipper (Listed, 1200m). He was again near the top of the three-year-old handicaps after quality stakes performances which included a third in the 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m).

Heroic Valour is owned by the Te Akau 2015 Breeding Syndicate (Mgr: Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM), after being purchased by David Ellis Ellis for $400,000 at the 2015 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale, from the draft of Curraghmore Stud.  Notably, when winning the Diamond Stakes, he became the first two-year-old Group One winner in the world for champion sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill).

Heat 28 Open 1150 metres (head, head 1:09.0)

Unfazed (4 m Zabeel - Fazed) - Danielle Johnson; settled second last, eight lengths 600m, set off around runners to range on the leaders turning for home and kept galloping solidly for a close fourth.
She is one of only five horses from the last crop of champion stallion Zabeel (Sir Tristram) and raced away to win her Maiden by nearly four lengths over 1400 metres in January this year at Rotorua.

Following the win, Sir Patrick Hogan said: “We own the filly and race her on lease with others, including some of the Super Rugby referees, in a team comprising Jamie Tout, Matthew Bell, Bryce Lawrence, Glen Jackson, Mike Fraser, Alan Muir and Mark & Chrissy de Lacy.”

Abbey Kay (4 m Keeper - Abbey Tralae) - Opie Bosson; away well third, steadied fifth to the 800m and not asked to do too much.

Abbey Kay is from an above average mare that won seven races, and having won her Maiden over 1200 metres she has the capabilities to win more.

Heat 29 Open 1150 metres (head, head 1:10.7)

Aquilo (3 g Snitzel - My My Maree) - Opie Bosson; camped behind the leading division in sixth, travelled kindly, bumped off balance into the straight but gathered up and ran home solidly for third without urging.

A powerfully built colt, purchased by David Ellis for $200,000 at the 2016 NZB Premier Yearling Sale, Aquilo is a half-brother to Group One winning two-year-old Marky Marky (Makfi).  After beating subsequent three time winner Felton Road (Pins) when trialling in December, Aquilo won his second start as a two-year-old before finishing third in the Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre Stakes (Listed, 1100m) in May at Te Rapa.

Heat 30 Open 1150 metres (head, neck 1:11.9)

Chambord (7 g Zabeel - Miss Montjeu) - Opie Bosson (below); restrained to last of five runners, keen to go faster, swept up widest around the home turn and had them covered in the straight for a narrow yet comfortable win.

Off the scene with injury since winning over 1200 metres last December at Awapuni, Chambord was purchased by David Ellis for $200,000 from the draft of Cambridge Stud at the 2012 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale.  Runner-up to Atlante (Fastnet Rock) in the 2013 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m), he is a very good quality stakes' performed galloper and still only lightly raced: 19 starts.
