Paul Richards, father of Jamie Richards, brings a wealth of experience. Originally from Waimate, South Canterbury, apprenticed to Rex Cochrane in Gore – the first trainer to win 1000 races in New Zealand – Richards then made his mark as stable rider for Brian Anderton at White Robe Lodge in Wingatui.
One of a select few to ride 1000 winners, Richards rated 2000 Guineas, Canterbury Gold Cup, and Counties Cup winner Random Chance as his favourite horse, and also had a soft spot for A Gordon For Me whom he rode in 22 of his 26 wins, and Canterbury Gold Cup winner Burton. He also rode winners in Australia, and Malaysia.
Turning his hand to training, Richards trained a small team at Wingatui, before relocating in 2014 to Byerley Park, Karaka. While stable star and multiple Group One placed sprinter Natuzzi (Coats Choice) was a headline act winning 12 races and over $500,000 in prize money, he collected 10 group & listed wins amongst a tally of 161 and $2.3 million in stakes.
Always fit, Richards continues to ride work and undoubtedly a valuable asset in the Te Akau team.
