Purchased by David Ellis, Augustus became the highest lot ever for this sale and was snapped up by Te Akau owners in less than two hours. Trained currently by Chris Waller, he was bought to target the 2019 Group 1 Singapore Derby and will in due course join Mark Walker in Te Akau Singapore’s stable. Already holding a nomination for the A$600,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby, his first start in the tangerine for his new owners will be in this Group 1.
A beautifully bred gelding, he had won three of his 11 starts when purchased, including winning in tough and emphatic fashion at Canterbury in May. Augustus is by champion sire Snitzel and is a half-brother to Group 1 Australian Derby winner and Group 2 Caulfield Cup runner-up Roman Emperor and Group 2 Wellington Guineas’ and Listed Bonecrusher Stakes’ winner Rios. His family is jam-packed with Group 1 winners such as Black Mamba (USA), Tully Thunder (Australia) and Glorious Days (Hong Kong).
