Description

Lot 215 b c Snitzel – Floria (Savabeel) $625,000 (draft: Haunui Farm)

This colt will share in forming the Te Akau 2018 Breeding Syndicate.

By one of three in the trilogy of breed shaping champion stallions in Australia: Danehill (Danzig), Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), and Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), this colt is the first foal from the impressive winning Savabeel (Zabeel) mare Floria, winner of the Brisbane Cup (Gr. 2, 2400m), Summoned Stakes (Gr. 3, 1600m), and Cuddle Stakes (Gr. 3, 1600m).

His grand-dam, Aria (Centaine), was also an impressive performer on the race track, winning four races, and the underlying attribute of horses in the family is acceleration.

“Our colts’ syndicates have been very successful for us,” said David Ellis. “Last year we bought Al Hasa (Exceed and Excel). We’ve bought Embellish (Savabeel), and horses like Rock ‘N’ Pop (Fastnet Rock), Burgundy (Redoute’s Choice), Darci Brahma (Danehill), and Xtravagant (Pentire), all of which are at stud or going to stud and earning income for the owners.

“The breeding syndicates have been very popular and this year’s syndicate was sold out in 48 hours. This Snitzel colt is the first we’ve got for this year’s syndicate.

“Jamie (Richards) went over recently to the Magic Millions Sale on the Gold Coast, looking at all the colts, including the Snitzel’s, and he gave me a really accurate description of what he thought of them.

“He’s a young guy that’s only had his licence for two years, but already trained 11 group one winners. It’s quite incredible how well he’s going and he’s got an unbelievably good eye for a yearling, and we work very well together at the sales.

“We’ve inspected every horse for sale here over the last six weeks, and came here with a shortlist of 140 which we’ve inspected two, three, four times and we know which ones we want.

“This colt would be on any trainer’s list at any sale in the world,” said Ellis, defining his conformation, quality, and pedigree.

“I’ve bought him to win the Karaka Million next year. But, the one thing I must have in a colt is the scope to train on and become a 2000 Guineas colt.

“He’ll be at the Te Teko trials in August, have his first race in early November, and he’ll be headed towards the Karaka Million.”

Regarding the purchase price, Ellis said: “It wasn’t my last bid”, suggesting he had more to spend.
