Lot 371 b f Not A Single Doubt – Meleka Belle (Iffraaj) $900,000 (draft: Haunui Farm)
David Ellis had the distinction of buying Champion Two-Year-Old filly Melody Belle (Commands) at Karaka, and this filly is her half-sister.
From debut winner to group one winner of the Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at her fifth start, with a stunning Karaka Million (Listed, 1200m) victory in between, Melody Belle became a revelation.
Winner of $250,000 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr. 2, 1400m) in May at Eagle Farm, Melody Belle recently took her record to five wins from 10 starts and $913,244 in earnings when winning the Mongolian Khan Trophy (Gr. 3, 1200m) on 27 January at Ellerslie.
By top sire Not A Single Doubt, a son of the undisputed king of Australian sires, Redoute’s Choice, she registered the highest price ever paid for a filly by this sire.
“She is one for the Fillies Syndicate,” said David Ellis, who bought Lot 290 b f Savabeel – Joy’s Choice (Redoute’s Choice) $900,000 (draft: Cambridge Stud) a day earlier and said only 20 percent was left remaining in the syndicate.
“I’ve been watching this fillies family racing for the past 40 years and breeders, the Sarten family and their daughter Marie Leicester, have always done a fantastic job and are really good horseman.
“It’s an unbelievable filly family and I thought the cross with Not A Single Doubt is absolutely top-class.”
She has a lovely cross of the greatest influence on the modern day thoroughbred: Northern Dancer.
“There were a lot of very good judges on the filly, different organisations came to me wanting to have a joint venture, but I wanted her exclusively for my Fillies Syndicate,” Ellis said.
“She was a standout filly from the moment I saw her at Haunui Farm, a stunner, and when she came out to parade I was with Joe Walls and Jamie Richards, and Joe said, ‘wow, David, have a look at this filly’.
“She has taken everything in her stride at the sales complex, never turned a hair, and she is just a beautiful Karaka Million type filly.
“Following the feats of Melody Belle, good race track performances by this filly will make her worth a fortune.”
