Lot 455 b c Exceed and Excel – Our Ella Belle (Encosta De Lago) $750,000 (draft: Pencarrow Stud)
Te Akau principal secured the third colt for the Te Akau 2018 Breeding Syndicate, a stunning colt to accompany Lot 215 b c Snitzel – Floria (Savabeel) $625,000 (draft: Haunui Farm) and Lot 301 b c Savabeel – Katie Lee (Pins) $1,025,000 (draft: Cambridge Stud).
From the high-class race mare Our Ella Belle, a fast finisher for third to Katie Lee (Pins) in the 2009 1000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m), the family has been nurtured by Pencarrow since (Sir) Peter and Philip Vela bought her fourth dam, Heidi Belle (Copenhagen 11).
“She’s a filly Joe Walls bought for me in the mid-70s,” said Sir Peter.
“As a breeder, one thing is to sell and the other is that they’re going to a good home, and probably the latter is more important and I’m delighted he’s going to the Te Akau team. And, you certainly couldn’t be disappointed (as a breeder) selling a colt for $750,000.
“It’s a great family and this is a great branch of it.”
Recounting the 1000 Guineas of Our Ella Belle, Sir Peter said: “David (Ellis) and his team, Mark Walker, trained her for the race and ridden by James Mac (McDonald) she never had all the luck that day but still ran third.
“We thought the mating with Exceed and Excel would make an exciting cross that you’d be happy to breed from if he could win a group one race – absolutely over the moon.
“We were lucky we got a good-looking colt and all the stars aligned.”
David Ellis said: “We trained the mother (Our Ella Belle) and she was a filly of enormous class, and I feel she was one of the best fillies that Te Akau has ever trained.
“He looked a stunning colt when I first saw him at Pencarrow Stud, a perfect type for the Karaka Million and one to train on for the 2000 Guineas.
“We’re thrilled to have another top colt from this great nursery (Pencarrow). We’ve had plenty of success with horses bearing their V in Box brand and I’m thrilled he’s the colt to fill my (colts) syndicate. It’s the farm where we bought Darci Brahma and Burgundy and I believe this colt is right up to their quality.
