Lot 111 b f Makfi – Espresso Cavallo (Lonhro) $115,000 (draft: Westbury Stud)
This filly is looking to follow in the footsteps of recent winner Gris Dame (Reliable Man), purchased by David Ellis for $125,000 at the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale.
Ellis said: “I’m not usually commissioned before the sales to buy horses, and normally buy on spec, but Julia-Rose (Ellis) commissioned me to buy a horse at the Ready to Run Sale (last year) that she wanted to syndicate for the first time.”
The resultant purchase was Gris Dame (owned by the Te Akau Double Trouble Syndicate) and next in line for syndication by Julia-Rose is this filly.
She is a filly with a very good pedigree:
Her sire, Makfi (Dubawi) was a British bred, French trained, 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) winner. Notably, Makfi has sired NZ Horse of the Year Bonneval, and New Zealand Filly of the Year Sofia Rosa.
Lonhro (Octagonal), the dam sire, was a remarkable racehorse in Australia: Champion Three-Year-Old, Champion Miler, and Horse of the Year, winning 26 of his 35 starts. He was a son of Octagonal (Zabeel), himself a Champion Two & Three-Year-Old and Australian Horse of the Year.
“We wanted to buy a couple of fillies at the sale and she was one of the standouts on our list,” Ellis said.
“She is a naturally athletic filly with a good way of going, from a nice female family and we really believe Lonhro is going to make it as a broodmare stallion. Makfi seems to be a prolific sire of good fillies and this filly certainly fits the mould.
“She is a rich colour, has a good head, and I think she will make a really nice autumn two-year-old to then train on again and be further improved into her three-year-old season.”
Interestingly, she has a very nice influence of Green Desert (Danzig) on the dam sides of her pedigree: through Dhelaal, the dam of Makfi, and as the sire of Volksraad, the dam sire of Queen of State, mother of Espresso Cavallo.
