Lot 192 br g Savabeel – La Belle Epoque (Montjeu) $350,000 (draft: Lyndhurst Farm)
“He is one of the most impressive horses I’ve seen at the Ready to Run Sales for a few years,” said David Ellis.
“If ever I’ve seen a horse that could win a Derby, and a big Cup race, then this is the horse.
“He certainly looks to have his share of speed, but really made in the mould of an exciting staying horse in the making and of course few are having more success with the progeny of champion sire Savabeel than Te Akau.
In recent times, at the Ready to Run Sales, Ellis has bought two horses by Savabeel: Hall of Fame ($230,000) was a Group One winner of the Levin Classic (1600m), registering five wins from 12 starts before being sold to Hong Kong. And Royal Success ($250,000), winning five of 11 and racing very well in his current campaign. While he purchased recent Savabeel star galloper Embellish, who won the 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) on 11 November at Riccarton, as a yearling.
Ellis bought Hall of Fame from the draft of Lyndhurst Farm, and also Te Akau Shark for $230,000 – the winner of his first two starts before finishing fast for fourth in the 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) on 11 November at Riccarton, and he looks a real Derby type.
“The dam sire of this horse, Montjeu, had a lot of success when standing at stud in New Zealand, and winning the Irish Derby, French Derby, and Arc de Triomphe, made him one the highest quality horses in the world that you’d ever wish to see,” Ellis said.
