Lot 362 2 f Atlante – Astardia (Starcraft) $50,000 (draft: J C Thoroughbreds)
A strong free going filly, she breezed up in the top 10% of times (10.54)
“She impressed us as a really athletic filly, with a lovely walk, plenty of strength and her breeze up was very good,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis.
Her sire Atlante (Fastnet Rock) won the 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) and Second Top Colt on the NZ 3YO Free Handicap, he unfortunately had his stallion career curtailed by a fatal accident during his second season at stud.
The first foal from a mare that won over a mile, her sire, Starcraft, was well known in New Zealand, winning the first two legs of the Group One Triple Crown at Hawkes Bay, going on to win Group One races in Australia, France, and England, and becoming World Champion Turf Miler.
The strong stallion component in her pedigree continues in the dam line sires. Heralded broodmare sire, Red Ransom, by English Derby winner Roberto, and Bluebird, a $1m yearling, Group One winner, and renowned for the quality he instilled as a sire.
“She has real depth to her pedigree,” Ellis said. “We have trained Group One winners by her grand-sire Fastnet Rock, an elite champion sire in Australia, and just a shame that Atlante had his career cut short.
“We have been impressed with the young progeny by Atlante that we have in the stable, they are natural gallopers and this filly fits the mould.”
