Lot 33 b c Ghibellines – Evancho (Shinzig) $13,000 (draft: White Robe Lodge)
Beautifully presented, as were all the yearlings in the White Robe Lodge draft, he is the first foal from a mare that won four times on good and dead ground, from 1800m to 2100m, and by new sire to the stud Ghibellines (Shamardal).
A first season sire at White Robe Lodge (est. 1956), Ghibellines was a highly thought of colt in Australia, racing only in stakes races, winning the Todman Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) as a two-year-old on good ground at Rosehill, and his three yearling representatives averaged $80,000 this year at Karaka.
“We’ve been very impressed by the progeny of Ghibellines, since seeing them at Karaka, and he’s an exciting young stallion,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis.
His sire, Darley stallion Shamardal, has a fantastic pedigree, with a Mr. Prospector influence of speed and versatility, and proved himself as a sire of both juvenile and classic excellence with 18 Group One winners.
The colt has a lovely cross of the most successful sire of all time: Danehill (349 stakes winners), through the dam side of Ghibellines and as the sire of dam sire Shinzig.
“We were keen to source a staying sort of horse by the sire and this colt fits the bill, and is obviously incredibly good value at the price,” Ellis said.
“The colt is a good mover, very athletic, will come back to the stud at Te Akau, be given time, and let develop into a Derby type horse.”
