Cornflower Blue, a classy daughter of Savabeel, was bred and is raced by Waikato Stud. She was entrusted to Te Akau to train by Mark and Pippa Chittick.
At just her fourth start in October 2020, the 3YO filly won on debut with Danielle Johnson in the saddle in September 2020 at Matamata and duly transferred south to Te Akau’s Christchurch base to prepare for a tilt at the $300,000 Group 1 NZ 1000 Guineas.
In early October 2020 she fought on bravely for fourth in the $50,000 Listed NZB Canterbury Belle Stakes for 3YO fillies over 1400m. It was a sign of better things to come as two weeks later, she won the $70,000 Group 3 Barneswood Farm Stakes over 1400m at Ashburton, again ridden by Danielle Johnson.
Trained by Jamie Richards, she became Te Akau’s seventh winner of the race – a traditional Group 1 NZ 2000 and 1000 Guineas’ lead up.
Taking her place in the $300,000 Group 1 Barneswood Farm NZ 1000 Guineas over 1600m in November 2020 on New Zealand Cup Day, and with Danielle Johnson again engaged, the filly was bold when fighting on for third to stablemate Kahma Lass.
Cornflower Blue has raced five times for two wins and three placings for stakes’ earnings of $68,200.
