Top weight Gold Trip has won a thrilling 2022 Melbourne Cup with a powerful finish to claim just the second win of its racing career.

Ridden by Mark Zahra, the UK horse — trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace — finished powerfully and streaked away to win ahead of Geelong Cup winner Emissary, with High Emocean charging home to finish third ahead of race favourite Deauville Legend who was fourth.

It was an unbelievable moment for Zahra, who finished second in both the Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup. Zahra was denied a ride on 2021 Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant because of suspension.

“I can't believe it. Obviously a bit overcome. Yeah, it's obviously a dream that we all want to achieve,” an emotional Eustance said after the race.

It was Zahra's first victory in the famous race, which has been held on the first Tuesday of November since 1876.

Crowds were limited to 10,000 last year because of Covid-19, but up to 10 times that number packed into the Melbourne track for the 2022 edition, despite chilly weather and frequent showers.

It was a dramatic race late, as Deauville Legend loomed as the potential winner as it tackled Knights Order who lead on the turn, however the $4 favourite faded late.

Local hope Realm of Flowers was the big betting mover before the race and also came from the back of the field to finish fifth.

Interpretation was officially last as it failed to finish the race but reports suggested the horse was OK.
