2022 Te Akau Fabulous Fillies Syndicate
Date: 14 Mar 2022
There is no doubting the rising significance of, and interest in, racing and breeding quality fillies and mares.
Being involved in royally bred fillies has an abundance of upside and potential return!
In recent times, Te Akau champion mares Avantage (Fastnet Rock) and Melody Belle (Commands) have ended their distinguished racing careers.
Dual Horse of the Year, Melody Belle won NZ record 14 Group 1 races (19 from 41 in total) and $4.3 million prize money before selling as a broodmare for $2.6 million.
Another former Champion Two-Year-Old, Avantage won 16 of 28, including nine Group 1 and $2.1m prize money before selling for $4.1 million.
For recent Te Akau Fillies' Breeding Syndicates, David Ellis purchased Exaltation (Not A Single Doubt) and Festivity (I Am Invincible) as yearlings at Karaka.
Through the deeds of Melody Belle, half-sister Exaltation has grown enormously in value and, in foal to Savabeel (Zabeel), she bowed out winning her fifth race on 26 February at Matamata. Her story concluded as it had started, in winning fashion. She is to be sold at auction in coming weeks as will be her recently retired partnership mate Festivity.
Festivity, by Champion Sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), again current leading sire in Australia, is stakes' winner of six races and already has enormous residual value.
Last year's Fillies' Syndicate has seen both Bright Blue Sky (Fastnet Rock) and I Choose You (I Am Invincible) take charge to win on debut. Bright Blue Sky then scored her first stakes' win at her second start while I Choose You has now been twice placed in stakes' races since. The value of these two juvenile fillies' has certainly soared.
The success of David Ellis buying quality and proven yearling fillies is undoubted, with reigning NZ Filly of the Year Amarelinha (Savabeel) becoming sixth to gain the title for Te Akau.
Ellis said: “It's so exciting for everyone involved in a Filly of the Year, and while Amarelinha has a fantastic pedigree page, you can't underestimate how much winning this honour means, on top of that, for her commercial significance when it comes to breeding. It's invaluable.â€
There are two shares only now available in the 2022 Fillies Syndicate - which includes the top priced filly from the Karaka Sale. By Fastnet Rock, from Memories of You she was labelled as the best filly offered in Australasia this year.
âž¡ï¸ Lot 98 bay filly Savabeel - Are There Any (Exceed and Excel) $350,000 (draft: Trelawney Stud)
“She's as good a Savabeel filly as any in the sale,†said David Ellis. “She's a a physical dream, who turns heads. Well balanced, she moves really well, walks like she know who she is. As Waikato Stud's Mark Chittick says, ‘no-one has the record of success with the progeny of Savabeel that Te Akau does'.â€
âž¡ï¸ Lot 135 bay filly Tivaci - Boulevard (Savabeel) $340,000 (draft: Waikato Stud)
“Tivaci is a young sire doing an outstanding job at stud and is bred on the same cross as his Group One winner Never Been Kissed,†said David Ellis. “Tivaci really looks like he's clicking with Savabeel mares and there are host of promising horses racing on the same cross.†This filly oozed class and is a fine example of athletic excellence.
âž¡ï¸ Lot 410 Fastnet Rock - Memories of You (Galileo) $850,000 (draft: Curraghmore)
“She is one of the fillies of the sale and one of the best I've seen at Karaka for the past five years,†said David Ellis. “She's by the all-conquering stallion Fastnet Rock that we've enjoyed so much success with. She's out of a Galileo mare that are so highly sought after, and is just a standout by every benchmark.â€
âž¡ï¸ Lot 618 brown filly Savabeel - Style By Design (Iffraaj) $525,000 (draft: Waikato Stud)
“She's a really good looking filly, well sized, who walked well and is very correct,†said David Ellis. “She's a lovely rich colour and appears the type that we could break in early. There is precocious speed in the family, so she's a filly for the race (Karaka Million 2YO), with class and presence. She's also the first foal from a young mare, which has worked very well for us over the years.â€
