4 Victoria Wins in 24 Hours - Seven Oceans Super
3 November, 2025
Given a gorgeous trip, Seven Oceans (3 f Flying Artie – With Purpose, by Pierro) won the A$45,000 Symal Plate Maiden 1000 metres on 31 October at Cranbourne (Victoria).
Last start, Seven Oceans was caught without cover from a wide draw (10) in the Maiden 3YO Fillies 1200 metres on 13 October at Kilmore, and received the perfect opportunity to improve from barrier three.
On her home course at Cranbourne, she began well for apprentice jockey Luke Cartwright, settling sixth behind a torrid group on pace and got the measure of Royal Honour (Blue Point) in the straight as the pair fought out the finish.
Solid through the jump out and trials' stage, Seven Oceans was freshened after doing well for second in her sole start as two-year-old, and broke through to win at her fourth start.
“Her career hasn’t started off with the best of luck,” Cartwright said. “She’s been trapped wide or not had things go her way, but today she drew a really good gate (3), the speed on suited her perfectly and I just kept her in a rhythm.
“She’s still new to racing, didn’t really know how to put them away, so a lot of improvement will come out of today’s win.”
On Good4 footing, Seven Oceans ran 1000 metres in 58.5 and paid $10.50 & $2.80 on the NZ TAB tote.
By versatile sire Flying Artie (Artie Schiller), her dam, With Purpose (Pierro) won four races to 1300 metres and each of her three offspring to race have won.
Seven Oceans was bred and retained for racing by owner Mark Sowerby (Emmanuel Bloodstock).
“It was a great ride by Luke (Cartwright), good to get a win for Mark (Sowerby), and to get her campaign back on track,” said trainer Mark Walker.
“She had a couple of bad barrier draws and things went wrong in the running, so it was really good to see her settle and relax after we made a gear change of a Norton bit and a tongue tie.
“She got a bit of a bump on the home turn, but once Luke got her balanced she found the line really strongly, which is what she had shown she was capable of. She’s a big, leggy, type of filly, and will only get better with time.”
Owner Mark Sowerby said: “Mark (Walker) and Ben (Gleeson) came to the farm and picked her out as a yearling and after she won a trial up here (Queensland) we sent her down to the Te Akau stables at Cranbourne.
“It was good to have them here on the farm and really good to get Mark’s views, being a superior and world-class horseman.
“We have 25 broodmares on 186 acres at Murwillumbah (Gold Coast), where we get a good amount of rain.
“We’re hopeful that she can progress towards a stakes' race during her three-year-old season. The whole family is fast and Mark has worked out she’s a speed horse, despite looking more like a miler type.
“I called her Seven Oceans after I completed the Oceans Seven Swimming Challenge, where one of the swims is Cook Strait, which I did last February 2024 and I finished the challenge last year. We’ve got a documentary coming out on that called: Don’t Be Prey.
“The biggest issue in Cook Strait is Great White Sharks, as we swim without a cage and it’s pretty scary. It really is extreme sport and the training is crazy. I’m glad it’s over and that I survived it.”
Seven Oceans was strapped by Cath Panozza.
