Another Night, Another Winner
5 September, 2015
Te Akau trainer Mark Walker celebrated another milestone at Kranji last night bringing up his 60th win of the season.
In a remarkable season to date, Mark has led the Trainers' Premiership for most of the season since kicking off with a winning treble on day one, 1 January 2015. The win of Brahms and Liszt on Friday was win 60, a tally which could have been even higher with Mark also preparing 53 second and 90 third place-getters - with many of those very narrowly beaten too!
Lining up in the S$38,000 Kranji Stakes D SW over 1400m, a patient and well-judged ride by Te Akau apprentice Shafiq Rusof saw the gelding come from well back in the field to win by a narrow margin. It was gutsy effort indeed by the 6YO son of Coats Choice to win for the second time at his 12th Singapore appearance. "Sweeney" (as he is known) has been very consistent with seven other top four placings and now $121,351 in the bank!
While it was win 60 for Mark, Brahms and Liszt was a hat-trick of winning rides for our apprentice "Suppy" on Friday evening - he has now won 38 races this season which is a whopping 20 clear of reigning apprentice premiership titleholder Harry Kasim who sits on 18 in second place on the table.
Last week Te Akau saw another Coat's Choice horse in Fine Choice win very well in Singapore for our team. Bought from the South Island Sale for a snip, Fine Choice has a bright future. He has raced five times for a win, two seconds and a third and has already earned $73,158 in prize money.
The Coats Choice brigade punches well above its weight and we have just a couple of shares now remaining in another very promising Coats Choice youngster from this year's South Island Sale - have some fun - he's out of the mare Blame the Music (so we have called him Elton as his stable name) and his now 3YO sister won twice last season as a 2YO!
Elton has broken in very well indeed and is a strong, beautifully actioned colt - ONLY $3687.50 plus GST for a 5% share!
