Te Akau's David Ellis and Karyn Fenton-Ellis gained notable success as breeders when Darci's Dream (3 f Darci Brahma - Sweet Dreams Baby, by Van Nistelrooy) won the Canterbury Belle Stakes (Listed, 1200m) with plenty of authority on Saturday Sept. 20 at Riccarton.

“It's a huge thrill and we've had a good record in the race,” said Ellis. “We love winning races in Christchurch, and Riccarton is one of our most successful tracks."

“It's another successful result for a horse with the DE brand. It's such a big advantage for any young horse to be reared on the hills at Te Akau and this filly was bought very astutely by Fortuna syndicator John Galvin. Where I have to take my hat off to John; he was so impressed with this filly that he went back and bought her sister (Windborne) this year. She too was an astute buy, having already won her first trial by three lengths and she looks a filly with enormous potential.

“She (Sweet Dreams Baby) has a beautiful Alamosa (O'Reilly) colt in the yearling sales next year at Karaka and will be served by Burgundy (Redoute's Choice),” said Ellis.

After Darci's Dream beat a strong field of three-year-old fillies over 1100 metres fresh up on August 20 at Taupo, trainer Jason Bridgman hatched a plan to head south in search of a stakes' victory within an ongoing plan towards the 1000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) in November.

With the experience of David Walsh in the saddle, Darci's Dream came from seventh in running before quickening to a winning advantage at the 150 metres and she proved too good over the final stages.

Returning $4.40 & $1.80, extending her record to three wins from seven starts for the Fortuna Darci's Dream Syndicate, Darci's Dream scored by three-quarters of a length in a time of 1:10.7 for the 1200 metres on Good3 footing.

A day earlier at Taupo, Fortuna celebrated its fifth success in a row when Prince Henry (Henrythenavigator) scored on debut and Darci's Dream continues an amazing run.

Sweet Dreams Baby is proving to be a producer of note. A mare by the athletic stallion Van Nistelrooy (Storm Cat), Sweet Dreams Baby has the talented British sire Diesis (Sharpen Up) and American stallion Woodman (Mr. Prospector) featuring as maternal dam sires and she includes the Champion sire Danehill Dancer (Danehill) in her family.

A great result to celebrate Te Akau's first black type success for the season!
