Bowman Confirmed for Gingernuts

This afternoon's (Friday) announcement that Winx will not be backing up from her Cox Plate win in the Emirates Stakes on Saturday week has cleared the way for Hugh Bowman to take the mount on star Kiwi galloper Gingernuts.

With Te Akau stable jockey Opie Bosson committed to the first day of the New Zealand Cup carnival and a book of rides headed by Al Basti Equiworld New Zealand Guineas favourite Embellish, confirmation of a rider for Gingernuts was on hold pending the decision on Winx.

Winx won a record-equalling third Cox Plate last Saturday to extend her unbeaten streak to 22 and her Group One tally to 15. However, following discussions this week between trainer Chris Waller and the champion racemare's ownership trio, she will now go for a well-deserved spell ahead of the Sydney autumn carnival and a possible European campaign.

“It's very exciting that we're able to confirm Hugh Bowman for Gingernuts,” Te Akau principal David Ellis told The Informant.

Gingernuts was flown to Melbourne on Wednesday and has settled in well ahead of his big mission in the A$2 million weight-for-age feature.
