BURGUNDY TO STAND AT CAMBRIDGE STUD

Five time stakes' winner BURGUNDY will commence stud duties at Cambridge Stud for the 2013 breeding season and will stand at a fee of $7000.

In announcing his decision to stand this magnificent son of Redoute's Choice, out of the Group 1 winning Zabeel mare Grand Echezeaux, Sir Patrick Hogan said:

“Cambridge Stud stood champion Sir Tristram and still stands his most successful son, Zabeel.  I've found the right horse to continue that winning formula with BURGUNDY through a Group One winning champion daughter of Zabeel.

“What a pedigree - when I look at every horse in BURGUNDY'S eight generations I find that each and every one has made a significant contribution at the highest level - indeed his is a remarkable pedigree page with Redoute's Choice, Danehill, Grand Echezeaux, Zabeel, Darci Brahma all Group One winners and producers and as well the four times Group One winning Ethereal - VATC Caulfield Cup, VRC Melbourne Cup, STC BMW Stakes & Queensland Oaks.”

BURGUNDY was bred by Peter and Philip Vela and purchased by Te Akau's David Ellis from the draft of Pencarrow Stud at the Karaka Premier Sale for $1.3 million.

David Ellis commented:

“BURGUNDY is the epitome of what a thoroughbred should be - a magnificent physique, a truly brilliant pedigree and an incredible temperament.  I have never been so delighted at securing a yearling as I was when I purchased Burgundy.  My close friends know that I adored that colt from the minute I saw him as a foal.  To me he was the horse of the sale and I syndicated him within 24 hours.

“BURGUNDY matured into a simply beautiful colt - he won on debut at Taupo, easily beating a colt that came out at its next start to win by 12.5 lengths.  In fact BURGUNDY won his first three starts including the Listed Canterbury Stakes and to win a stakes' race at just his third start over 1600m at Riccarton showed his versatility,” said David Ellis.

“Of his five stakes' wins, his performance to win the Group 3 Cambridge Breeders' Stakes on a Dead5 track at Te Rapa in a time of 1.09.12 stands out - this was the fastest time in this race for 40 years.”

“The syndicate that owns BURGUNDY comprises a fantastic team of mostly New Zealanders and I have been proud to manage this horse on its behalf.  The syndicate is delighted that BURGUNDY will stand at Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan's world famous Cambridge Stud - he could not have a better opportunity at stud.  My wife Karyn and I will be sending a number of our mares to support BURGUNDY and I know that he will be well sought after with breeders at the stud fee of $7000.  It is wonderful that New Zealand breeders will have the opportunity to mate a mare with a stallion of this quality for just $7000.,” said Ellis.

In conclusion Sir Patrick Hogan noted:

“BURGUNDY's is a pedigree stacked with Group One winning champions as well as Group One producing horses - there is not a weakness to be found in any horse in his generation table, which brings to mind another stallion SIR TRISTRAM who started at stud at the same age 36 years ago.”
