Cambridge Double - Pokuru Gold Shines on Debut

Debutante Pokuru Gold (3 g Darci Brahma – Pokuru Nugget, by Stravinsky) kept a good thing going for breeder/owner Ian Farrelly when winning the $18,500 Maiden 3YO 970 metres on 13 September at Cambridge.

A week earlier, Fon Memories (3 f Eminent – Trutorio, by Oratorio) debuted successfully for Farrelly from the Te Akau stable in the $18,500 Maiden 3YO 1200 metres at Avondale, while providing the Brighthill Stud resident sire Eminent (Frankel) with his first winner.

Pokuru Gold is out of a top Waikato Stud family, going back to third dam Star of the Knight (Sir Tristram), which includes Group One winners by Savabeel (Zabeel), Diademe and Te Akau trained Noverre (now standing at Waikato Stud), along with terrific filly Starcent (Centaine), and from whom Farrelly purchased grand-dam Pokuru Star (O’Reilly) as a yearling at Karaka.

Commanding favouritism ($2.60 & $1.30) after running home strongly for second in his sole trial on 29 August at Waipa, Pokuru Gold utilized barrier one to lead for jockey Sam Weatherley and after shaking off the company turning for home he raced away to win as he liked by three and a half lengths.

“It was a positive ride by Sam (Weatherley),” said co-trainer Mark Walker.

“He’s a homebred of Ian Farrelly’s and great to see his colours in the winner’s circle again, winning with his last two runners we have presented.

“He’s a promising son of Darci Brahma (Danehill), who won five Group One races for us before becoming a Champion sire, and this horse has the speed to run really good sectionals which should stand by him to win more races.”

After stable-mate Kith ‘n’ Kin won the previous race on the programme over the same 1000-metre distance in 56.9, it was a good gallop by Pokuru Gold to clock 55.5 in the race sponsored by Group One Turf Bar.

Pokuru Gold was strapped by Cooper Stumbles.
