Dancerina Waltzes Away - Win 2 for the Day

Justifying dominant favouritism, Dancarina (4 m Sebring - Dance for Me, by Commands) recorded a smart fresh-up victory in the $30,000 Rating 65 1000 metres on Saturday at Riccarton.

Ridden with the patience of Job by Te Akau apprentice Joe Kamaruddin, Dancarina stood the leader six lengths on to the course proper at the 600m, but travelled well and once released she mounted a sustained sprint.

In the race named Ellie Stokes Charity Trust Dinner 22 September, Dancarina ran 1000 metres in 57.0 on footing upgraded to Soft6 and paid $2.00 & $1.00 on the NZ TAB tote.

A strong Maiden winner over 1400 metres in February at Ruakaka, including two thirds from three starts in her first campaign, Dancarina was held together nicely by Troy Harris when finishing fourth in a trial on 16 August at Avondale.

Owned by Fortuna Dancarina Syndicate (Mgr: John Galvin), she was selected and purchased by David Ellis CNZM for Fortuna Racing for $100,000 at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, from the draft of Widden Stud.

She is by top-class Australian two-year-old and Golden Slipper (Gr. 1, 1200m) winner Sebring (Danehill), the sire of 122 stakes' winners, among over 2000 wins, including 18 Group Ones. Her dam Dance for Me (Commands) won twice to 1400 metres in Australia, and is from a good winning family that included third dam, Champion 2YO Filly in NZ, Ballroom Babe (Citidancer).

“She's a four-year-old that's been very lightly raced,” Galvin said. “She was slow to mature and had a few issues, but won her Maiden very well earlier in the year and did nothing wrong in her other two starts.

“Wisely, we made the decision to put her aside after she finished third in March at Ellerslie, just to let her develop and mature a bit more and it seems to have paid off.

“She's a nice mare with a lovely pedigree, another Magic Millions purchase for us, like Rubicon Crossing (winner earlier in day at Wanganui), and Handsome Rebel.”

Galvin said he would discuss future race options with trainer Mark Walker, while Dancarina was stabled at Riccarton.

“She's only had four race day starts, so we're still working her out,” Galvin said. “She could become a Steward's Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) candidate during Cup Week, but irrespective there is a whole smorgasbord of races that open up to her.”

Dancarina was strapped by Katija Cherie.
