Exhibition at Ellerslie

Stable-mates Equinox (Exceed and Excel) and Sasso Corbaro (All Too Hard) prepared for upcoming assignments with an exhibition gallop on Saturday at Ellerslie.

Ridden by Craig Grylls and Opie Bosson, respectively, the pair produced good work over 1000 metres in 1:00 and last 600m in 34.9.

Owned by the Te Akau 2018 Colt Breeding Syndicate (Mgr: Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM), impressive debut two-year-old winner Equinox was purchased as a yearling by David Ellis for $750,000, from the draft of Pencarrow Stud, at the 2018 Karaka Book 1 Sale.

“He won well on debut at Trentham, and we just wanted to give him a look around Ellerslie,” said Te Akau trainer Jamie Richards, adding that the imposing colt would contest the $70,000 Waikato Stud Slipper (Gr. 3, 1200m) next Saturday, 23 February, at Matamata, ahead of the $200,000 Sistema Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) on 9 March at Ellerslie.

Last season, stable-mate Sword of Osman (Savabeel) became the sixth Matamata Slipper winner for Te Akau before becoming their fourth Sistema Stakes' winner at his next start.

A winner of four races in New South Wales, in training for the China Horse Club, Sasso Corbaro is plotting a course towards stakes racing and commences with a trip away and race in the $30,000 Rating 82 1200 metres next Saturday at Otaki.

“She (Sasso Corbaro) worked up well,” said Bosson, while Grylls said: “He's a cool customer and he's heading the right way”.
