Fab Win for Fabulous Flight

Capping a terrific weekend for Te Akau Racing, Fabulous Flight  (6 g I Am Invincible - Court Flying, by Flying Spur) won the $11,000 Rating 74 1650 metres on Sunday at Waverley.

Having produced five winners on New Zealand Cup Day at Riccarton, including 1000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) winner Kahma Lass (Darci Brahma) and Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m) victor Avonallo (Belardo), plus additional success with Festivity (I Am Invincible) at Tauranga, the season tally for leading trainer Jamie Richards increased to 53, together with 11 stakes wins.

Although eighth at his previous start, Fabulous Flight was not far away amongst a clump of runners in the Rating 74 1400 metres on 28 October at Te Aroha, and the four-time winner to 1600 metres extended his count with a powerful victory.

Ridden by Danielle Johnson, who has a massive 37-win advantage in the Jockey Premiership and won the Waverley Cup (2200m) in the racing beforehand, Fabulous Flight began well to lead from barrier five, travelled best approaching the home turn and kicked clear with plenty of stretch over the concluding stages.

In the race sponsored by C. R. Grace and Tony Wilson Livestock, Fabulous Flight was a late drifter on the NZ TAB tote to return $5.10 & $2.10 after winning by one and a half lengths.

“His form wasn't too bad and it was a good win,” Richards said. “He didn't do much first-up and never had the rub of the green at Te Aroha. His work since had been good at home, working with Kahma Lass (mentioned above) and doing it well enough to suggest that it was a good race for him.

“Danielle (Johnson) was positive from the outset and it was ideal to get him up on the speed. He seems most comfortable there and he found a good kick on straightening. He kept up a strong gallop to win well.

“While a bit frustrating at times, I think the key to him is probably a mile and being able to settle near the pace.”

Purchased by David Ellis CNZM for $205,000 from the draft of Lyndhurst Farm at the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale (which take place again next week (18-19 Nov.)), he is a lovely type of horse with excellent depth in his pedigree, owned by the Te Akau Fabulous Flight Syndicate (Mgr: Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM).

“What a wonderful weekend with seven wins for team Te Akau, just incredible, and I'm thrilled for Fabulous Flight's owners that he's now won five races and looks capable of more,” Ellis said.

“You only gain these achievements when you've got an incredible team behind you. It's not just one person, or two people, but the whole team gelling and work well together. We've got a fantastic bunch of experienced horse people that work for us and it's really showing in our all-round results.

“Karyn and I work extremely hard to get the best people involved for the horses and owners and times like this are so rewarding. It's a hell of a lot of work, but what has transpired already this season for Te Akau makes it all worthwhile.

“To have had 53 wins, including 11 stakes wins, at such an early stage of the season is just terrific.”

Fabulous Flight was strapped by Kate Belsham.

“Kate travelled the horses and it was her last day with us before she moves on to another role in the racing industry,” Richards said. “She's tremendous value, Kate. We wish her all the best and it was great to see her strap a winner on her last day at the races for us.”
