Four Win Saturday - Singapore Also on Song
Date: 30 Apr 2023
After three wins at Te Rapa in New Zealand, including Aromatic in the Group 2 Travis Stakes, Te Akau's Singapore stable was ready to continue the winning momentum.
It didn't take long for that to occur with promising youngster Rhett Butler cruising home on debut in the Fortuna colours.
The Charm Spirit 2YO was simply too good for his opposition in the hands of Te Akau apprentice Sarwi Jamil, and went on to post a convince 2.5 length win, also advantaged by the claim, taking him down to only 48.5kgs.
The performance was a lesson in patience executed brilliantly by the young rider - despite jumping well, Jamil was happy to settle back and let the horse find his feet. As they turned for home, his position seemed impossible, but the brakes came off - and he sailed on by.
Te Akau Singapore trainer Donna Logan commented:
“That was just incredible to watch - he just did not seem to be in contention but on reflection he did get a lovely soft run back in the field, had plenty in the tank once they straightened for home and of course had a big weight advantage compared to the three year olds in the race - I thought young Jamil handled him really well."
Rhett Butler was purchased by Fortuna/Te Akau at the Ready to Race Sale in Sydney for A$80,000.
The excitement of the race night was building to the 3YO feature, the S$150,000 Group 2 3YO Classic over 1400m - featuring three Te Akau stable runners. Sadly the rain came pouring down, and the final three races, including the feature, were postponed.
Due to the inclement weather, the last three races (Races 10 to 12) of the Saturday 29 April meeting, Three-Year-Old Classic (1400m), were in fact called off. The feature race, which is the second Leg of the Singapore Three-Year-Old Challenge series, has been rescheduled to Saturday 6 May.
