Four Win Saturday - Superb Indeed

Registering the Te Akau team's fourth win on the programme, Superbly Written (3 f Written Tycoon – Supara, by Domesday) produced a big effort to win the $40,000 GM Accounting & Consulting Rating 65 1200 metres on Saturday at Riccarton.

The Walker & Bergerson training partnership had wins earlier on the programme with Beau Brummell (Embellish), Lady Of Court (Savabeel), and Quintefeuille (Xtravagant), while Plenty O’ Style (Embellish) and Millefiori (Iffraaj) finished second.

It continued astounding form for the trainers, who have recorded 37 wins at a strike rate of 3.2 this season in the South Island, having recently notched 100 wins to remain in sync with the ratio of winners that saw Te Akau set a new domestic record last season of 203.

Superbly Written took a step in the right direction when winning her second start earlier in September at Taupo, and returned to racing in fine fettle.

She tracked the  leaders home when resuming with fourth in the 3YO 1200 metres on 23 December at Trentham, ran fastest last 600m on the day (31.9) for second to stable-mate Angels Wings (Heroic Valour) in the Rating 65 1100 metres on 27 January at Riccarton, and rated a top three chance but needed luck from a wide draw (13).

Although luck never really came her way – caught back and wide – Superbly Written gained cover for a brief moment before being presented wide on the track by Niranjan Parmar and the leading apprentice wound her up to win comfortably by one and three-quarter lengths.

On Soft5 footing, Superbly Written ran 1:08.0 and shortened in betting from an earlier fixed odds quote of $3.50 & $1.65 to pay $2.70 & $1.40 on the NZ TAB tote.

“She’s put together a good record, and is starting to mature, and it was a big effort to win the way she did today,” said Mark Walker.

Like stable-mate Lady Of Court (Savabeel) that won earlier on the programme over 1400 metres, Superbly Written, Walker suggested, would also prepare for the $80,000 NZB Airfreight Stakes (Listed, 1400m) on Saturday 2 March at Wingatui.

Owned by Te Akau Magic Fillies' Breeding Syndicate (Mgr: Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM), Superbly Written was purchased by David Ellis CNZM at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, from the draft of Newhaven Park.

By an outstanding sire, Written Tycoon (Iglesia) topped the Australian General Sires’ List in 2021 after rising from an initial service fee of A$8,250 to command A$165,000 and now has a private fee.

Leading First Season Sire and Champion Two-Year-Old Sire, Written Tycoon has produced horses to win over 120 stakes' races including 15 Group Ones, and already a sire of sires with Golden Slipper (Gr. 1, 1200m) winner Capitalist, Group One winners Written By and Ole Kirk, and Rich Enuff, Winning Rupert.

Dam Supara competed mainly in stakes races, trained by Gai Waterhouse, as a three-year-old finished runner-up in both the Emancipation Stakes (Gr. 2, 1500m) and Surround Stakes (Gr. 2, 1400m), after winning early in her career over 1100 metres.

From the family of Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), dam sire Domesday (Red Ransom) was a smart Group Two winning sprinter, sire of Group One winning stallion Pressday, while also making his mark as a broodmare sire, given excellent line-breeding, and registering particular success with Northern Dancer line mares, evident in pedigree of Supara.

“She’s got a terrific pedigree, one that is hard to beat, and she’s really starting to make it as three-year-old filly, now,” Ellis said.

“It’s not hard to fall in love with a filly like this and we were thrilled to be able to secure her from a stud that we have come to know so well, through Newhaven Park standing Xtravagant and Cool Aza Beel.

“She’ll prepare for a stakes' race at her next start and looks like she’ll be competitive given the way she won today.”

Superbly Written was strapped by Kaydence Ferguson.
