Future Looks Bright for Group 1 Galloper

The long-term outlook for the Group One galloper Chambord is looking good.

He has been side-lined since last spring when he suffered a serious leg injury in his final gallop on the day he was to be flown to Christchurch for a tilt at the Gr.2 Coupland's Bakeries Mile.

“It's well-documented that he fractured a cannon bone,” co-trainer Jamie Richards said.

“He's making a long and slow recovery.”

The most recent X-ray in July returned a positive report for the gelded five-year-old son of Zabeel.

“The vet was really happy and everything has knitted back together so hopefully he keeps going the right way,” Richards said.

“He started a month on the water walker on the 1st of August before he returns to the stable in early September and then we'll be getting him ready for the Christmas racing.”

Chambord showed his early talent when he finished runner-up in both the Listed Ray Coupland Stakes and the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas. He returned north to place in the Gr.2 Great Northern Guineas before he failed twice over ground.

His sole appearance as an autumn three-year-old resulted in an impressive sprint win at Te Rapa and last season he posted three consecutive second placings, the last of them behind Atacama in the Listed Matamata Cup.
