Happy Birthday Horses

It is a very special day today!
All of our horses have their birthday - yes even though they have all been born at different times, in the southern hemisphere every horse has its birthday on the first day of August each year.
All thoroughbreds have the same birthday so that their ages can be standardised for comparison because of the historical lack of records of actual birth days.
All thoroughbreds celebrate their birthdays on the same date, January 1 in the northern hemisphere and August 1 in the southern hemisphere.
So our foals born in the latter part of last year move from being weanlings to yearlings. Our yearlings from the Karaka Sale this year and our home breds of 2013 become two year olds and thus eligible to race for the first time should they be sufficiently precocious.
There will be some special treats in store today for sure!
