Cher Ami – The Pigeon-Saving Horse You’ve Never Heard Of!
Wait - Cher Ami? Isn’t that a famous World War I carrier pigeon? Yes … but this is about the horse that helped save Cher Ami’s human keepers.
In the chaos of the First World War, a U.S. Army Signal Corps unit found itself surrounded in the dense Argonne Forest in October 1918.
Known as the “Lost Battalion,” they were cut off from supplies and under relentless German fire. Their only hope of communication was to send messages by carrier pigeon, but enemy snipers targeted both messengers and animals, and many pigeons were lost before they could deliver vital information.
In the middle of this desperation, the unit’s officers called on a small, wiry bay gelding they had been using for supply runs - nicknamed “Jack.”
Jack was not fast, not particularly beautiful, and certainly not bred for war, but he had an uncanny knack for navigating through shellfire without panicking.
When it became clear that they could not get to the pigeon loft to collect their last remaining bird - Cher Ami - Jack was pressed into service. His mission: carry Cher Ami in a small cage strapped to his saddle, across a valley swept by machine-gun fire, to the loft so the bird could be launched with a message begging for friendly fire to stop.
Jack bolted forward, hooves slipping in the churned-up mud, shrapnel raining all around. He was hit twice - once grazing his shoulder, once in the hind leg - but he kept going. He reached the loft, the handlers released Cher Ami, and the pigeon’s message eventually saved the lives of nearly 200 men.
Jack’s wounds healed, but he was never the same - his limp permanent, his ears twitching at every loud sound. He returned home to a quiet farm life, never decorated, never mentioned in official accounts. But to those men, Jack was the forgotten hero who made their miracle possible.
We never forget - our faithful friend - our horse.
