Jerry is Coming Home
The Informant reports:

Three months after suffering a freak injury at the Melbourne Cup carnival, star galloper Gingernuts is due home to continue his recovery at Te Akau Stud.

The triple Group One winner fractured a foreleg pastern while cantering to the start for the Emirates Stakes on November 11 and after having a splint placed on the leg he was transported to the Werribee Veterinary Clinic.

Real concerns were held that the injury may have forced Gingernuts to be euthanised, but after assessing the situation surgeons were able to operate and insert screws to pull the fracture together. After an initial satisfactory recovery he was transferred to the nearby King's Park Clinic but had to return to Werribee when an infection set in at the site of one of the pastern screws.

Once that situation was corrected Gingernuts returned to the recovery clinic and he has now received the green light to return to New Zealand.

“He'll be home on Thursday, we can't wait to get him home to Te Akau Stud,” said Ellis. “The interest in this horse has been incredible, TV One has requested if they can be there to film his arrival.

“We're still some way off getting the all-clear for him to return to training, but the people who looked after him at Werribee did a fantastic job and it's wonderful to have got to this stage after suffering such a serious injury.”
