Matamata Double - First Leg

Te Akau New Zealand celebrated two wins at the local meeting today - making it three wins in 48 hours.

The first came with High Chaparral (Sadler's Wells) filly Sneaky Feelings (ex. Landara, by Kreisler) showed steely resolve to secure victory at her second start, in the Farmlands Lawn & Sports Turf Maiden for fillies and mares over 1600 metres on July 1 at Matamata.

Steadied rearward in the early stages by jockey Matt Cameron, Sneaky Feelings tracked up off the rail in the heavy ground and began improving from the 700 metres. Into a battle amidst a trio at the 150m, she saw off both rivals to win by a head.

“She dug deep and needed a horse right next to her to find that bit more,” said Cameron. “She was not entirely happy in the ground but once she got to the outside she travelled. Although a bit flat when I asked her, it was more that she didn't really know how to get down and do it but once she got near the second horse she kicked and found a bit extra.

Having recently purchased He's Remarkable (Pentire) to become his flagship stallion, Mapperley Stud boss Simms Davison had gone to $90,000 for Sneaky Feelings as a yearling from the Windsor Park draft at the 2011 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Sale.

“I bought her with a view that if she could win on the track it would give us an opportunity to turn her into a broodmare,” said Davison. “She was a lovely type of yearling and at that stage everyone was going crazy for the stock of High Chaparral. Her sister, Geemeup (High Chaparral, goes alright as well and as a five-year-old has won six times for trainer Bjorn Baker at Warwick Farm.

Davison races the filly with mates: Matt Paterson, Scott Stevens, Harry Davison, James Lorimer, Matt Main, Sam Yates and Matt Karam.

“For only her second start, to show that much determination, I was bloody impressed,” said Davison. “How much ability she's got we'll have to wait until she matures a bit, but at least we know she's definitely got the guts.

Te Akau trainer Jason Bridgman had intimated beforehand that Sneaky Feelings would more than likely go for a spell following the win, and suggested the filly shapes to appreciate better footing in a new campaign.
