Matamata Tuesday Trackwork


Sothys New Zealand 2000 Guineas candidate Puccini indicated he might be more than an outside chance in Saturday's Riccarton classic when he worked in dashing style at Matamata this morning.


On a good plough, Puccini (P McKay) was partnered by Coupland's Mile entry Estrato (S McKay) over1000m in 1:02.4, finishing off with a brilliant final 600m in 35.8. It was very good work by the McKay stablemates as they prepared for the New Zealand Cup carnival.


New Zealand 2000 Guineas outsider Deschabeel (Roff) went with Rotorua Friday candidate My Mestari (Forbes) cut out 1200m in 1:19.2, with their last 1000m in 1:04.2 and 600m in 37. Sir Elmo (A Jones) prepared for Saturday's Metropolitan Trophy at Riccarton with solid work alongside I'll'ava'alf (Conder) over 1200m in 1:17, 1000m in 1:03.2 and 600m in 38.2.


Tiger Moss (C Grylls) and Irish Encore (Blair) worked well in preparation for Te Rapa on Saturday, cutting out 1000m in 1:03.5 and 600m in 36.2. Cristal Heights (Dowling) and Volcano (S Wong), two more for Te Rapa, left 1200m behind in 1:17.3, 1000m in 1:03.6 and 600m in 37.8.


CalmBay (R Jones) and Marcelle (Dowling), who run at Avondale next Monday, covered the same ground in 1:18, 1:03.2 and 36.4. Others to work well over ground included Royal Rhythm (Dee) and Show No Emotion (Hercock), who recorded 1:20.8, 1:03.8 and 36.4, Inis Rose (S Wong) and Racquetor (Leveque) 1:16.4, 1:02.2 and 36.2, Our Essence (C Grylls) 1:17.7, 1:03.4 and 36.5, and Savarhys (R Jones) and Yin Yang Master (Coleman) 1:15.2, 1:01.4 and 35.8.


Recent fresh-up winner Viadana (C Grylls) looked bright when allowed to stroll over 1200m in 1:21.4, with her last 600m in 39.4. Our Famous Eve (P Turner) continued her Coupland's Mile preparation with an easy 1200m in 1:21.8 and 600m in 38.


Bachelor Keen (Sapsworth) and Wairaka (Chiong) didn't chase time as they covered 1200m in 1:20.4, 1:05.4 and 37.2, while Peerage (Dee) and Clos de Tart (Hercock) impressed as they cut out the same distance in 1:17.4, 1:02.7 and 36.6.


Hot Char (Coleman) showed dash over 1000m in 1:01.8 and 600m in 35.8, Rio Rose (Blair) took 1:02.4 and 36.2, and Toma Valea (Roff) and Rose Of Falkirk (M Brosnan) clocked 1:01.8 and 36.6. Te Rapa feature sprint entry Undisclosed (P McKay) was partnered by the unraced Vettel (J McKay) over 1000m in 1:04.8 and 36.8.


On the all-weather track New Zealand 1000 Guineas favourite Bounding (K Jones) appeared to be thriving as she cruised through the last 1000m of easy work in 1:16.2 and 45.4.


Time honours went to Jimmy Hoffa (P McKay) and Newyork Bakerboy (J McKay) as they left 1000m behind in 1:01.8 and 600m in 36.2. Irish Moon (Coleman) and Pachenko (A Jones) also wasted no time over 1000m in 1:02 and 36.3.


Pussy O'Reilly (B Grylls), who has improved with her fresh-up run, was kept to 1000m in 1:08.4 and 600m in 41.2, while stablemate Powerplaya (B Grylls) took 1:13 and 39.8.
