Matt Cameron Update

While his return to the saddle has been delayed a week, Te Akau stable jockey Matt Cameron remains on target to chase down the Premiership title that has eluded him when finishing second in the past two seasons.

“I was planning for this weekend, but it now looks like the following,” said Cameron, of a proposed come back on April 19.

“It's unfair on the owners if I'm not quite one-hundred percent and although it's frustrating not being out there I also have to look after myself.

Three behind Opie Bosson, after riding 149 winners in 2012/13 and three short of Lisa Allpress the season before when notching 156 wins, Cameron took timeout to recuperate from a knee injury since completing Auckland Cup Week on March 8.

His closest rival, Mark Du Plessis, has gone ahead by one to post 101 wins but Cameron feels he can master the situation prior to season end on July 31.

“I had a decent buffer before I got hurt. Cup Week was huge, with winning the Auckland Cup, even though I got hurt before then and had I known the severity of the injury at the time I probably wouldn't have ridden."

Having narrowly escaped requiring surgery for the knee, which could have ruled him out for up to nine months, Cameron said the ligaments are healing quickly.

“I have to be sensible about it after tearing two ligaments in my knee and severe bone bruising and it's the bruising around the knee that hurts the most.

“I'm having physiotherapy, keeping moving, and doing all I can. We're undergoing some landscaping at home, so I've been cleaning up paddocks and just doing bits and pieces.

Cameron has remained largely injury free as a jockey and it was a broken wrist that last ruled him out, about six years ago.

“I'll be back fighting fit and ready to chase the premiership down,” said Cameron. “There are a few months to go and I definitely know what needs to be done.
