Te Akau's second winner from two starters today was Milan Miss, a daughter of Darci Brahma.
Terrific in her preliminary and with jockey Matt Cameron a study of concentration prior to the start, Milan Miss (4 m Darci Brahma - Falaniella, by Faltaat) never let favourite backers down when powering clear to win the Benchmark 65 2000 metres by two and three-quarter lengths.
Extending the margin on her last start win over 2060 metres in the same grade at Wanganui, Milan Miss made it two from two on the eight-race programme for Te Akau trainer Jason Bridgman after Stanica Star (Danzero) had won half an hour earlier.
Beginning well from barrier five in a field of ten and electing to trail the leader with a lap to run, Milan Miss became pocketed as positions changed nearing the home turn. But, once switched to the rail in clear galloping room at the 250 metres she soon put the issue beyond doubt.
“She showed another dimension today,†said Bridgman. “She was attacked early, had to hand up, and then after being held up she showed a good turn of foot. Although she didn't beat a lot, the manner was good and she gives the impression that she has progressed on and is capable of more.
Having now won both her starts since stepping to a middle distance, Milan Miss has developed physically into a strong staying mare for the Te Akau Milan Miss Syndicate and boasts a record of three wins from ten starts.
Falaniella, the dam of Milan Miss, was unraced but stems from a solid line of well-bred mares from Italy, Great Britian, and USA. Her grand-dam, Masaniella (Masad), recorded five wins from 1500m to 2200m, including three listed races, Paesanella (Seattle Song) won six times from 1400m to 1800m, and next in line Excitable (Nijinsky) won three races.
Purchased by David Ellis for $50,000 from the Karaka Select Sale, the owners of Milan Miss are an extremely enthusiastic and excitable group and their mare is continuing to do them proud.
