On Exhibition at Matamata

In A Twinkling (5 g Fastnet Rock - Moment in Time, by Archway - pictured below) ridden by Opie Bosson and Te Akau Caliburn (6 g Camelot - Enchanted Evening, by High Chaparral - main picture), Troy Harris, had an exhibition gallop between races on Wednesday at Matamata.

Each preparing for the Haunui Farm Karaka Classic (Listed, 1600m) on Saturday 31 October at Pukekohe, In A Twinkling was tracked at an interval by Te Akau Caliburn with both working nicely through the line on Slow9 footing.

“That was just to tick them over before racing Saturday week at Pukekohe, ahead of the Counties Cup there three weeks later,” said premiership leading trainer Jamie Richards.

“We would like to get them through to the City of Auckland Cup and Auckland Cup, but have to be mindful of incurring too much weight along the way and good form lines seem to come through that race on the way to the (Auckland) Cup in March.”

Attempting to defend his title in the Counties Cup, winning under a superb front-running ride by Bosson, In A Twinkling resumed with a solid fifth in the Rating 103 1400 metres on 5 September at Te Rapa, and followed with a notable fourth under 62kgs in the Open 1600 metres on 26 September at Ellerslie.

A winner in February and brave when second in the New Zealand St Leger (Listed, 2600m) in March at Trentham, Te Akau Caliburn was a European purchase by Te Akau principal David Ellis CNZM with Cups' races in mind and he has developed into a lovely staying type.
