Our Brazen Beauty
19 June, 2025
Deserved of victory, Brazen Affair (3 f Brazen Beau – Southern Romance, by Medaglia d’Oro) won the $17,000 Ascot Farm Rating 75 970 metres on 18 June at Cambridge (poly-track).
A stylish trial winner before debuting as a two-year-old, Brazen Affair had raced clear to win her Maiden earlier in the season, while her resuming and second-up runs for second, on 21 May and 4 June at Cambridge, were each in the fastest last 600m and contained elements of hard luck.
Although not the fastest into stride on this occasion, Brazen Affair benefitted by drawing barrier one in order to improve on the inner, came off the trail turning for home and once clear she finished strongly to arrest the lead near the line.
It was a good ride by experienced jockey Vinnie Colgan and a richly deserved win by a very consistent filly.
Justifying favouritism, Brazen Affair was not far outside the track record (54.7), running 970 metres in 55.1, and paid $2.10 & $1.30 on the NZ TAB tote.
“It was really good to see her win, especially after not getting all favours in her last couple of starts on the course,” said Mark Walker, training partner with Sam Bergerson.
“She’s had multiple problems, mainly with her wind, but she can certainly gallop and she’s a filly that tries really hard.
“We’ll give her a short freshen-up, but she gets around the synthetic course really well at Cambridge, and I can see her continuing to advance through the grades into next season.”
Brazen Affair was purchased by David Ellis CNZM for $110,000 at the Karaka 2023 Book 1 Sale, from the draft of Westbury Stud, and owned by Te Akau Brazen Beautiful Racing Partnership (Mgr: Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM).
Brazen Affair is by the same sire, Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible), as former stable-mate On The Bubbles, winner of the Karaka Million 2YO and Group One Sires’ Produce Stakes, whom Ellis also purchased as a yearling at Karaka.
At the time of purchasing Brazen Affair, Ellis said: “She’s a filly that reminded us of On the Bubbles, with a deep girth, short-coupled, and good mover.
“And, it’s a family best known for leaving good fillies.”
Champion 3YO Racehorse in Australia, Brazen Beau, by Champion Australian Sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), has left 340 winners, including 27 individual stakes' winners, with On The Bubbles among his best performers.
Dam Southern Romance is by very good sire and broodmare sire Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado), while third dam Tennessee Midnight, by breed shaper Danehill (Danzig), is the dam of Group One winner Aloha (Encosta de Lago), multiple Group Two winner Libertini (I Am Invincible), and family of Group One winner Seabrook (Hinchinbrook).
Brazen Affair has bloodline crosses to Danzig, Northern Dancer, and speed influence Bletchingly.
Brazen Affair was strapped by Rhiannon Smith.
