Our Horses, Our Heroes

The Horses That Served & Sacrificed
They asked for nothing -
no glory, no reward -
yet gave everything.
These loyal hearts on hooves,
who marched beside our soldiers
into the unknown.
They came from green valleys
and golden plains,
the pride of paddocks,
steady and sure,
chosen not just for strength,
but for spirit.
Across oceans they travelled,
through storms and silence,
to lands torn by fire and fear.
Yet they stood tall,
calm in chaos,
eyes wide, but never turning back.
They charged not for conquest,
but for courage -
bearing the wounded,
carrying hope,
forging bonds with their riders
that could never be broken.
In Gallipoli’s dust,
on the ridges of Palestine,
in France’s wintered mud,
they gave all they had -
faithful, brave, and unshaken.
Though few returned home,
they remain
forever part of us -
in stories, in statues,
in the quiet pride
that stirs when we remember.
On ANZAC Day,
we honour them too -
our war horses,
our silent companions in battle,
whose courage galloped
beside the best of men.
We must never forget them.
