Our Royal One Successful Again
After letting down stylishly on slow footing to win recently at Pukekohe, Royal Success (3 g Savabeel - Royal Show, by Deputy Governor) again displayed his appreciation for rain-affected going to race away in the Rating 65 1600 metres on 26 May at Otaki.

On Slow9, Royal Success appeared to travel sweetly for jockey Matt Cameron, improving to third at the 800m and, after taking over at the 400m, he raced clear to second rate his opponents by six lengths.

Said to have taken plenty of improvement from his second up win by co-trainer Stephen Autridge, Royal Success was a tightening commodity with the TAB and closed off $2.90 & $1.60 tote favourite.

The time for the 1600 metres was 1:42.4.

Bred by the late Jim Campin at Chequers Stud and purchased by David Ellis for the Te Akau Royal Success Syndicate, his dam Royal Show (Deputy Governor) was a stakes' winner of four races up to 1400m and has already left three time stakes' winner Folding Gear (Johar) in Australia. Royal Success has a strong pedigree, with Sir Ivor (sire of champion stallion Sir Tristram) within the first five removes through both his sire and dam.

“It was very great to see him win in such a fashion, after an equally good win at Pukekohe,” said co-trainer Jamie Richards.

“He appears a horse that will handle any conditions, even next year on top of the ground.

“We have been patient with him, as too have the owners, and it's good to get the rewards for everyone including staff because they get a great lift from each win as we head into the winter months.  He's another lovely horse that Dave (Ellis) bought from the Ready to Run Sale; he's very progressive and we could see him in nice staying races next season,” said Richards.

It was the 94th win this season for the trainers and keeps them seven ahead in the premiership with two months remaining, while jockey Matt Cameron scored his 49th win this season for Te Akau.

“It was a terrific win,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis.

“A lot of our really good owners came into the horse and he's shown plenty of potential from day one but he has needed a bit of time and where we're lucky is that Steve and Jamie have been so patient with horses like this.

“He'll probably have one more race this time in and it looks as though the owners are really going to have some fun with him next season,” said Ellis.

Royal Success was strapped by Gary Ritchie.
