Powerful Paulownia
28 February, 2018
In training for thoroughbred powerhouse Coolmore, debutante Paulownia (3 f Fastnet Rock - Forest Native, by Forest Wildcat) overcame a wide draw to win on 28 February at Pukekohe.
It was skilful riding by Opie Bosson that enabled Paulownia to circle from the rear of a capacity 14-horse field and grab victory on the line in the $10,000 Platinum Rentals Maiden 1200 metres.
Unbeaten in three trials leading up to the event, with Bosson suggesting she was one of the best he had ridden recently, Paulownia was highly speculated in betting to return $1.90 fixed at the close.
Not only harbouring talent, Paulownia also has terrific pedigree, being a sister to Champion second season sire in Australia, Foxwedge, and a horse Te Akau principal David Ellis is only too happy to have in the stable.
“It's a real honour to have the famous navy blue Coolmorre colours represented by our stable,†Ellis said.
“Steve (Autridge) and Jamie (Richards) trialled this filly in March and April last year and although thrilled with what she showed we decided to give her a nice early spell to prepare for the 1000 Guineas and those sorts of races,†Ellis said.
“However she had an injury hold-up that required surgery. It was so disappointing for us at the time because we knew she was a high class filly however she has an ownership that certainly understands their horses and they were more than happy to be patient with her.
“So it was terrific to see what we did today, the filly coming from where she did in the run - only good horses can do that. Opie had thought she could win on the back of her trial the other day.â€
Ellis said Paulownia would now be aimed towards the $100,000 Wellington Guineas (Gr. 2, 1400m) on New Zealand Oaks Day at Trentham on 17 March.
“And providing she continues to thrive, as she is, we would look at taking her to some really nice races during the Brisbane carnival,†he said.
Co-trainer Jamie Richards said: “t was always going to be awkward from the draw and she was always going to get back, but she got to the outside, let down really well to win and she's got a ton of improvement in her.
“A special thanks to Coolmore for sending her over to us. It's a privilege to have their navy colours in the stable.
“She's been a work in progress after being injured last winter but she has some real upside about her and the best is still to come.â€
