Quattro Quinta Collects Another at Trentham

Loving a trip away and returned to scene of his Wellesley Stakes (Listed, 1000m) win, Quattro Quinta (3 g Darci Brahma - Quintette, by Alamosa) rifled out victory in the Rating 74 1200 metres on Saturday at Trentham.

After requiring his resuming run, when caught wide in a 3YO 1200 metres on 19 February at Ellerslie, Quattro Quinta was aided by barrier one and always appeared comfortable in front. Stoked up 300m out by Te Akau apprentice Joe Kamaruddin, he looked good in his action and won with more in hand.

On Dead5 footing, Quattro Quinta ran 1200 metres in 1:08.5, last 600m 33.1, and paid $4.90 & $1.80 on NZ TAB tote.

“It's great to see him back in the winner's circle,” said trainer Jamie Richards. “The horse had been going well at home and his work has been good.

“Fresh-up, he got back in an awkward position, seemed a bit uncomfortable right-handed, and never got into the race at all. Whereas back left-handed, on a course he's won well at Group level previously, he was able to dictate the speed and although he stayed on his inside leg, he raced well and found a good kick.

“I was very happy with the way that he won. He's a class horse, there's no doubt about that and the win should set him up nicely for the rest of his campaign.”

Richards suggested Quattro Quinta could target $80,000 Cambridge Breeders' Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) on April 30 at Te Rapa, following interim races.

Quattro Quinta is bred and owned by Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM, Greg Tomlinson, David and Matthew Peacocke, and Oliver Saxton.

“He was bred by Karyn and some really good stable clients,” said David Ellis, fresh from a busy week buying yearlings at Karaka.

“He had five starts as a two-year-old, won on debut, won the Wellesley at Trentham, and has had three seconds, so they've had a great time racing him.

“David and Matt (Peacocke) had a share in Avantage, and the team raced the dam of this horse, Quintette, and really enjoy racing good horses.

“Lydia Truesdale travelled our two horses overnight to Trentham. She does an outstanding job for us and it's always fantastic to have a winner on the programme at Trentham.

“The Book 1 horses that we bought have been home on the farm for a couple of days. I went around them all this morning and honestly can't believe that we've got so many nice horses to have in the stable.

“There is an enormous amount of quality and class amongst them and it's very exciting.”

Well put together, with an action and conformation to match, Quattro Quinta emulated his sire Darci Brahma (Danehill) as a debut winner and similarly had an outstanding two-year-old season.

Purchased by Te Akau principal David Ellis CNZM, Darci Brahma was in a different class when winning as a two-year-old in January 2005 at Avondale, prior to winning the Matamata Slipper (Listed, 1200m) at his second start, finishing second in the Sires' Produce Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie, and winning the T J Smith Stakes (Gr. 1, 1600m) at Eagle Farm. Darci Brahma won five Group 1 races for trainer Mark Walker before becoming an instrumental part of the New Zealand breeding industry.

The dam of Quattro Quinta, Quintette (Alamosa), was stakes' placed winner, finishing runner-up at just her second start as a two-year-old in Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m) on NZ Cup at Riccarton, while grand-dam Everswindell (Align) finished second in 1000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m), third in both Sir Tristram Fillies Classic (Gr. 2, 2000m) and Lowland Stakes (Gr. 3, 2100m), before placing in Wellington Cup (Gr. 1, 3200m) and winning New Zealand Cup (Gr. 2, 3200m).

Quattro Quinta has a cross of immortal sire Northern Dancer (Nearctic), through sire line of Champion Sire Darci Brahma and dam-sire line of Quintette.
