Romantic Lady All Heart

In the colours of Sir Patrick and Justine, Lady Hogan, Romantic Lady  (4 m Power - Romantic Time, by Fastnet Rock) resumed with a last stride victory in the $27,500 Rating 74 1200 metres on Saturday at Awapuni.

In the race sponsored by Zafara Foley and Cervus Equipment, Romantic Lady slotted in three back on the outer from an awkward barrier (8), was aided by a torrid pace as Desert Magic (Per Incanto) smoked along with a slipped saddle, and reeled in Stumpy (O'Reilly) on the line.

Extending her record to four wins from 10 starts, and three seconds, Romantic Lady had completed a hat-trick of wins at a similar time last season, and finished second twice from three starts during her recent campaign.

A staunch and talented competitor, Romantic Lady was ably ridden by Ryan Elliot, clocked the 1200 metres in a polished 1:10.5, and sharing favouritism with Stumpy she returned $2.80 & $1.40.

“It looked like there was going to be good tempo in the race, so we'd planned to ride her off the pace,” said trainer Jamie Richards, notching his 56thwin for the season and buffer of 33 atop the premiership.

“We wanted to find out if she could get 1400 metres and the way she won I think she might.

“It was a good honest performance to get there in the last bound and she will take plenty of improvement off that. She'd been freshened since last racing and had a decent blow afterwards.

“I'm really pleased for the owners. The team at the Middle Barn has done a good job with her and Anna (Jones) and Trev (Stewart) who are down there looking after them, too, and staying at Roydon Bergerson's is a big help as well.”

On a competitive day of domestic racing, Romantic Lady capped a win on the back of stable-mate Perfect Scenario (Iffraaj) finishing third in the first race on the programme, while further north Aromatic (Sacred Falls) and Quattro Quinta (Darci Brahma) were each runner-up at Pukekohe.

Owned by Sir Patrick Hogan, John Aubrey, Richard Johnstone, Michael Macky, James Montgomerie and Bill Taylor, purchased by Te Akau principal David Ellis CNZM for $92,500 at the 2018 New Zealand Bloodstock Book 1 Sale, from the draft of Cambridge Stud, Romantic Lady is the first foal of a race winning filly over 1250 metres in Sydney, by Champion sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill).

“You don't get the rub of the green every Saturday, like we did last weekend winning seven, but the horses are racing very well and the staff are doing a great job with them,” Ellis said.

“It's a big thrill to get another winner for the esteemed gentlemen that own Romantic Lady. We've won a lot of good races for Sir Patrick (Hogan) and always great to see his colours in the winner's circle. John Aubrey is a Past President of the NZ Thoroughbred Breeders' Association and was on the Waikato Racing Club board with me for a long time, and all the owners are good friends and getting a real kick out of racing this talented filly.”

Romantic Lady is very well bred, carries a beautifully balanced Danzig cross through her sire-lines, and has a bright future in racing and breeding.

Romantic Lady was strapped by Trevor Stewart.
