Savy Yong Blonk - Win 50
27 December, 2018
Last start winner Savy Yong Blonk (3 f Savabeel - Ampin, by Pins) showed terrific progression with a smart win up in grade on 27 January at Rotorua.
Without the ‘rub of the green' on debut in November at New Plymouth, Savy Yong Blonk had obliged in the Maiden 1400 metres on 7 December at Matamata, and looked every bit a stakes' quality filly when winning the $10,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Pearl Series Rating 65 1400 metres.
“She's a nice filly that we like,†said Te Akau trainer Jamie Richards. “We've had a bit of a rap on her at home for a while and good to see her string a couple together.
“We wanted to bypass Ellerslie over Christmas on purpose and just find another soft race and keep her confidence up. She's not the easiest to train, a typical tough sort of Savabeel, but I think she will probably go to the Desert Gold (Gr. 3, 1600m) now at Trentham (Jan. 19) - give her a trip away.
“She's going well, a nice progressive filly with a lovely pedigree and a good filly to have in the stable for the Gartshore boys, who are great supporters of the game.â€
Improving to three back on the inner after being last on settling, Savy Yong Blonk travelled on a nice rein for rider Opie Bosson when tracking clear around the home turn and her acceleration, untouched, was compelling over the final 200m.
“She did it easy and all under her own steam,†Bosson said. “She's a filly with a lot of ability. Trudy (Thornton) gave me a nice track into the race and once I let the brakes go she really sprinted nicely.â€
Asked if she could get to black type level, Bosson said: “She's definitely got the ability and her brain is getting better every time she gets out there, so I think so.â€
A winner on slow ground at Matamata, Savy Yong Blonk appreciated the Dead6 going to record 1.24.4 for the 1400 metres and hotly supported she paid $1.80 & $1.60 in the field of seven.
Bred and owned by Bill and Jim Gartshore, Savy Yong Blonk is the first foal from unraced mare Ampin. Her grand-dam, Ambitious (Last Tycoon), was runner-up in the 1000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) before leaving seven individual winners of 22 races, and third dam, Starcent (Centaine), was Joint Third Top Filly in her three-year-old season.
“It's tremendous to get the support of breeders like Bill and Jim (Gartshore) and I'm thrilled for them,†said Te Akau principal David Ellis.
“They're top blokes, very successful in business, and to breed and race the filly is a real feather in their cap. They bought the grand-dam Ambitious after she'd had a few foals and going to stallions like Pins and Savabeel has made this filly very valuable because she's from a great family.â€
