Second Leg of Mark's Treble
30 July, 2017
From a great family, and purchased by Te Akau principal David Ellis for $120,000, Justice Light (3 g Darci Brahma - Amaryllis, by Red Ransom) extended his fine record with a win in the $38,000 Kranji Stakes D 1200 metres on Friday night in Singapore.
Ellis bought Justice Light at the 2015 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale (pictured at the sale), from the draft of Pencarrow Stud, and following three seconds has now won his last two from a total of seven starts.
At the time of purchase, Ellis said: “He is a good, strong, running type of horse. Mark (Walker) trained his mother to win eight races, including the Darley Plate (Gr. 3, 1200m) at Ellerslie, and of course he also trained Darci Brahma to win five Group One races.
“We really wanted to buy this colt and feel that he was particularly good value at the price,†Ellis had said.
Another product from the outstanding offerings of Pencarrow Stud, his grand-dam, Lafleur (Zabeel), impressed winning on good ground and rated Third top filly on the NZ 3YO Free Handicap, and there is no shortage of quality throughout the family.
The early comments of Ellis: ‘good, strong, running type of horse', were spot on when it came to the manner of victory by Justice Light.
In front after 200 metres, Justice Light travelled at good work, on an even keel, and jockey Vlad Duric never really turned him loose as he cruised to the line with a two and a half length advantage.
The 1:10.2, last 600m in 36.3, time was pretty respectable on good turf footing for the 1200 metres and expectations duly met by the $1.90 favourite on the NZ TAB.
“He's a horse that Dave (Ellis) bought off Sir Peter (Vela) at Karaka, and I obviously know the family well,†said Walker, referring to having trained both the sire and dam.
“Amaryllis was a hell of a good mare and kept getting better and better as she got older, and after I left for Singapore Rambo (Steven Ramsay) and Julia (Ritchie) had her as a five-year-old, that was her best season, and I think this horse will be the same. He's about to turn four but I think you'll see a really nice horse once he's a five-year-old.
“It's a very good family. We have just lightly raced this horse and he hasn't had many starts. We've just been letting him mature and best is ahead of him.
“He won really well last night,†added Walker, of the win by Justice Light.
The family of Justice Light goes back to champion filly Habibti (Habitat), the fourth dam. Habibti was Top of the 1983 European 3YO Classification, and Top Filly of the 1982 Irish 2YO Free Handicaps.
