Shebringsmerubies in Glittering Form
19 September, 2019
The Te Akau Girls Having Fun Syndicate (Mgr: Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM) had good reason to celebrate after Shebringsmerubies (4 m Sebring - Run Away Ruby, by Ferocity) won the $10,000 The Clothier Farms Maiden 1400 metres on 18 September at Matamata.
Having finished strongly from a rearward position for second when resuming on the course in August over 1200 metres, Shebringsmerubies benefitted by both a step up in distance and a deft ride by Opie Bosson.
Meeting a solid field, Bosson was in no rush off the gates, settling fourth last, but aided by a competitive pace. Although eight lengths astern approaching the 600m, Shebringsmerubies travelled sweetly, advanced in a charge of the light brigade at the 200m and prevailed with impeccable timing in a close finish.
On Slow7 footing, Shebringsmerubies ran the 1400 metres in 1:26.2, last 600m in 36.2, and paid $4.10 & $1.70 on the NZ TAB.
“Joe (Kamaruddin) just got a little bit far back last time, and he's an apprentice who's progressing well with time, but the best rider in the country on today was certainly a big help to her,†said Te Akau trainer Jamie Richards.
“She had some nice form around her last year and she's just been a little immature. Dave (Ellis) didn't pay a lot for her at the Gold Coast Sale in June and she's raced by a lovely group of lady owners, with Karyn, and it won't be the last time you hear of her. While there's still a bit of rain around she'll have the chance to get through the grades before racing again in the autumn.â€
Offered by Vinery Stud, Shebringsmerubies was purchased by David Ellis for $57,500 at the 2017 Gold Coast National Yearling Sale.
“She was very unlucky not win during her first campaign, finished second three times in six starts, and it's a great result for the all the girls in the syndicate,†Ellis said.
“She was a beautiful grey filly, correct, with a great walk, strength, and plenty of presence about her and certainly took our eye during inspections.
“She's the first foal from a mare that showed versatility to win three times from 1200 metres to a mile. Her grand-dam won four times as a two-year-old; she being from a Rory's Jester mare, out of Godswalk mare that also won at two, so there was plenty to like in her pedigree.
“Everybody should know by now that I love buying first foals and the success we've had with them has been outstanding; Darci Brahma, Hall of Fame, and Melody Belle just for starters.â€
