Silver Lake Super at Trentham

After saddling his eighth stakes' winner for the season a day earlier at Te Rapa, leading trainer Jamie Richards kept the pedal down during Labour Weekend when Silver Lake  (4 m Redoute's Choice - Silver Blossom, by Galileo) won the $10,000 Maiden 1200 metres on Sunday at Trentham.

Last season, when winning the Premiership and Champion Trainer titles, Richards prepared 17 stakes' winners in New Zealand, adding three Group 1 wins in Australia, with 11 of his 20 Group & Listed wins coming in Group 1 races, and a total of 104 wins for the season.

Interestingly, at the same time last year the stable had three stakes' wins to its credit. So, Need I Say More (No Nay Never) winning the James & Annie Sarten Memorial (Gr. 2, 1400m) puts the stable well ahead and, having shortened into favouritism for the 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) on 7 November at Riccarton, he gives them a chance to not only extend the run but also become the seventh 2000 Guineas' winner for Te Akau.

Silver Lake is in training for owner/breeders Brendan Lindsay MNZM & Jo Lindsay at Cambridge Stud, for whom Richards trains brilliant mare Probabeel (Savabeel), a gallant performer when seventh on Saturday in the Cox Plate (Gr. 1, 2040m), after winning the Epsom Handicap (Gr. 1, 1600m) at her previous start.

Silver Lake had produced a notable fresh-up third to subsequent impressive winning stable-mate Entriviere (Tavistock) in the Maiden 1200 metres on 23 September at Matamata, and with the addition of visor blinkers she rated a top three chance.

Silver Lake crossed to co-lead a line of three on the inner and the $1.80 favourite stuck bravely to her task after negating the junction onto the course proper with an advantage under in-form rider Danielle Johnson.

On rain-affected Dead5 footing, she ran the 1200 metres in 1:10.8.

“She was good today and key to her is possibly racing left-handed,” Richards said. “We'd waited for the right race. She drew wide so we scratched on Matamata Cup Day (10 Oct.) and the next meeting had a wet track. Although it was a long way to go for a Maiden race, it did look a nice option for her.

“She drew well (5), had a good jockey on, who was able to find the front and dictate and although she'd never led before she still won with authority.

“She has plenty of ability and it's just up to her to keep producing it on race day. It was a satisfying win and good to get another for Brendan & Jo (Lindsay), who are great supporters.

“We missed narrowly for them with Kahma Lass (Darci Brahma) on Saturday in the Soliloquy Stakes at Te Rapa, and later in the day we had Probabeel line up in the Cox Plate for them. She's going to come home and have a spell now in New Zealand, and we'll prepare her from our Matamata stable to campaign during the autumn in Sydney.

Silver Lake has an enviable pedigree with both sire Redoute's Choice (Danehill) and dam sire Galileo (Sadler's Wells) each having produced over 300 stakes' winners. For the record, Redoute's Choice has sired 351 stakes winners, Galileo 328, and leading sire of sires Danehill has 349.

Te Akau principal David Ellis CNZM said: “It's always a massive thrill winning races for Brendan & Jo (Lindsay) because they're huge supporters of Te Akau Racing and they're doing a great job at Cambridge Stud. It's an honour to have such a strong involvement with them.

“Need I Say More became Jamie's 500thNew Zealand winner yesterday at Te Rapa, his 79thstakes winner, with over $17 million in prize money, and with Silver Lake and Burgundy Rose winning today it took his tally to 40 already this season.”

Silver Lake was strapped by Hunter Durrant.
