Singapore Sunday Preview
4 September, 2016
RACE 1
A few chances to speak of in this opener. Baymax (8) ran on without threatening the winners at his last run. Will appreciate the extra 200m. Stick with him. Water Park (9) is starting to make his presence felt. Well drawn. The Argentinian-bred should not be ignored in this. Can make the board, or even win. Swift (6) won at his last outing when switched back to turf. Trier who won't be out of the action inside the last furlong even if his draw is not ideal. Alfonso (7) had no excuses at his last run. Got a nice drop on leaders, hit the front but petered out in the straight. Worth better than that. Give him another chance. Visors on. Bad gate.
RACE 2
Even contest for Restricted Maidens. Johnny Kongos (7) ran above expectations at his last run in spite of a wide gate. Was a lot more forward and stayed on well for second. Has drawn better this time and more improvement is on the cards. Commando Eclipse (6) is making good headway if his second run is anything to go by. Seven furlongs should be more up his alley. Keep safe. After a couple of bland first runs, Energizer (1) showed a bit more spark at his third run. This looks more like his kind of trip. Include in calculations from now on. Winterfell (10) did not quite live up to his forward debut second-up but did not finish that far off the placegetters either. Will relish extra 200m. Bears watching.
RACE 3
With a bit of luck, longshot Northern Knight (7) could have upset the applecart at his last outing. Seems to have made further inroads and won't be at such long odds this time.Whose Else's (5) is a model of consistency. Never worse than fourth in six starts. On-pace runner who should be right in the mix when the whips are cracking. Davinci (4) finally bounced back to his best at his last run. Came charging late but was denied by Sun Empire. Working in good fashion and will be in the market here. Mark Eclipse (3) lost no marks at his last start when a set of blinkers was fitted to him. Seems to need more ground but can fill the minors if the pace is genuine.
RACE 4
Spalato's half-brother Satchmo (3) is slowly coming to hand. Put writing on the wall with a storming third to Celeritas at his last race. Shadow roll on. Bad gate. There is a race for him soon. Born A Fighter (1) was in a winning mood at his last start and duly opened his account. This will boost his confidence from now on, even if he has his job cut out from the outermost alley. Won't be far off. Turquoise Son (6) made a sound comeback after a 10-month layoff with a fourth place to Uncle Lucky. Has come on further and should turn in an improved performance. Miss Waimataitai (9) was a shade disappointing at her last start. Overraced a little down the back. Can atone.
RACE 5
Emerging stayer Rockfast (1) ran a smart third over a distance not made to suit first-up. Has a touch of class and can come up trumps here even if it is still a tad sharp. Bahana (7) is bidding for a three-in-a-row but this looks much harder. Form cannot be faulted, though, and he can still hold his own here. On-pace runner The Jeuneyman (9) has no weight on his back. May try and steal the race from the front. Outside chance. Wild Geese (3) is struggling to regain his form of old but he did trial well on August 11. Form looks slightly better. Not without a place claim.
RACE 6
Even contest. Easy Dragon (1) is racing with a lot more zip these days. Found one better at his last two runs. In good order and must be kept in mind here in spite of wide alley.Klever Warrior (8) has not gone unnoticed at his last three races. Has slipped down the ratings and has reached a level where he should be able to be more competitive. Moved yards. Tongue-tie on. Go close. Tembesu Estrela (3) is still winless after 15 starts. He is often around the mark but seems to lack that little extra to finish it off. May have to settle for another place. General Conatus (4) mixes his form. Scored over this trip two runs back but went backwards last time out. Chance if on song.
RACE 7
Top three-year-old Magnum (1) should prove too good for this. Trialled nicely last week and is not far off his peak fitness. Can win first-up in this field where he looks a class above. He should, however, look out for Touch Me Not (2) who ran a creditable fourth less than two lengths off the winner Pole Paradise first-up from a 16-month spell. Talented sort who can give Magnum something to worry about, especially from marble one. Blinkers on. Divided House (6) is a game mare and it was encouraging for her connections to see her bounce back to form at her last start. Can measure up here and has what it takes to win this. Anonymous (7) keeps running good races. Well placed in this even if he has drawn off the track. Crossover noseband replaced with Kyneton noseband and winkers. Won't surprise if he shows up here.
RACE 8
This is shaping up as a match-race between the toppie Fitzroy (1) and the bottomweight Queen Roulette (9). There is a 6.5kg pull between them with Nooresh Juglall riding Queen Roulette 1 ½ kg over, but Fitzroy should still be able to hold sway. Queen Roulette has improved by leaps and bounds since her quiet debut. Raced away to an emphatic win at her last run. If she brings that form here, she will give Fitzroy a run for his money. Lucky Lincoln (4) is resuming from an eight-month spell. Form on training tracks is okay. Hard to see him get the measure of this lot but he may sneak into the minors with some luck. Chopin's Nocturne (2) lost no marks when fourth to Cyborg, albeit he was one-paced, at his last outing back in June. Freshened up since. Has drawn barrier No 1. Can be backed for a place.
RACE 9
Wide open Jumbo Jet Trophy. Don't underestimate Rafaello (8). This horse has really thrived since being well beaten by Debt Collector (9) in the 3YO Classic and the Guineas. Has fitness edge over Debt Collector this time around. Trip suits, but is disadvantaged at the weights. Debt Collector emerged as the undisputed 3YO champion in the last two Legs. Spelled since and has been working well at his return at the tracks. Winkers on and has drawn in. Should be thereabouts and will definitely improve on that first-up run.Nova Strike (7) should not be overlooked here. Not the easiest horse to ride but he always gives 100%. Goes well on turf, too. Has drawn barrier No 1. In the mix for a long way.Affleck (4) has been kept ticking over since his last-start win. Faces much tougher task this time but if he can lead at his own leisure again, he should be right in the mix at the business end.
RACE 10
Competitive line-up. Gadawon (2) has struck a purple patch of form. This does not look any tougher and a three-in-a-row is well within his reach. He will, however, have to contend with serious challengers in the shape of Miss Blanchett (6) and Mr Try (7). Both are last-start winners and have trained on. They are more than capable of fighting out the finish although the journey is a little short for Mr Try. Morales (11) is racing again after his closing third to Lim's Knight last Sunday. May be able to stay in touch having this time drawn the inside gate. Not without claims in this bunch.
RACE 11
On his last two dominant wins, Satellite Prince (7) steps up as the horse to beat here. Meets stronger lot but the way he scored suggests he should be competitive here as well. Should be able to tuck in with a nice smother in transit from his nice low draw. Another bold show expected. Nazir (3) was a transformed horse with the blinkers on at his last run. Was a lot sharper and could have even scored. If he reproduces that form here, he can make the board. Extra 200m and barrier No 2 in his favour. Succession (10) ran to his true form at his last outing. Rising in grade but the field is not overly strong. Can measure up. Bravo Charlie (1) looked a winner last Sunday. Fought on gamely before going down narrowly. Backing up and should go well again.
