Summer Monsoon Super

Summer Monsoon Super

Trainer Jamie Richards took one to race on Sunday at Cromwell, and Summer Monsoon delivered a copybook victory in the $25,000 Narelle Pools Rating 72 1400 metres.

A loose favourite ($5.50 & $2.20 tote) on the strength of his stylish Rating 65 grade victory two starts ago at Motukarara, and hard fought second in the Rating 72 1400 metres on the first day of Cup Week (Nov. 9) at Riccarton, the former stakes' placed two-year-old has always harboured ability and now adding consistency.

Given a gun ride by Jason Laking, from barrier two, things could not have panned out better. From three back on the inner, he was able to work off fifth to the 600m, confidently poised rounding the home turn and reeled them with a sense of timing.

On a day when forecast rain was set to intervene, thankfully it abated for the track to remain Good3 and in the right order to run the 1400 metres in 1:22.8.

“I thought that was a really good win and he was given a lovely ride by Jason (Laking),” Richards said. “We'd had the race picked out for him for a while. Everything went to plan, he got off the fence at the right time and swooping down centre track is the correct way to ride him.

“We can't rush him early as he tends to over-race and if we settle him with cover he can finish off. He's not a bad horse on his day and we're really pleased with the result. I don't think it will be his last win, if we can keep placing him right.

“A big thanks to Rachael Kramer and Lydia Truesdale, who are doing a great job with our horses based at Riccarton.”

Owned by the Te Akau 2016 Sydney No. 1 Breeding Syndicate, and good enough to finish second in the Matamata Slipper (Listed, 1200m) as two-year-old, Summer Monsoon was purchased by David Ellis at the Sydney Easter Yearling Sale.

“Jamie (Richards) has done a good job placing the horse and it was a $25,000 race,” Ellis said. “It was a terrific win and Karyn and I are thrilled for the owners. They've all been really patient and it's nice to see him in this sort of form.

“I still think there's improvement to come in this horse. He looked to present in first-class order and Jason rode him exactly how Jamie wanted him to.

“Rachael and Lydia are doing a great job looking after the horses. Jamie was down there on Wednesday night and watched them gallop on Thursday morning. He's very happy with the way they're going and while a few have been unlucky, we are sure they can hit their straps heading into Christmas.

“We've got five in the south at present and there may be an opportunity to have more.”
