Te Akau Avondale Preview

Te Akau New Zealand has five horses racing on Wednesday 23 January at Avondale.

As on Tuesday 22 January the conditions were: fine and Dead4, rail true. No rain forecast.

1.15 p.m. R2 1 Willpower(3 g Power - The Lady) - Shafiq Rusof; freshened following two starts in the spring and sustained a big finish for fourth when trialling over 935 metres on 8 January at Cambridge. Resuming in the $10,000 Maiden 1200 metres, he has contested strong form races, has natural ability, and rates an each way chance.

1.15 p.m. R2 3 Ocean Star(3 g Ocean Park - Star of Gibraltar) - Opie Bosson; like Willpower (above) was freshened following two starts in the spring and trialled very well for second over 935 metres on 8 January at Cambridge. Drawn wide (12) in the $10,000 Maiden 1200 metres makes it awkward, but he too rates an each way chance with luck in running.

1.50 p.m. R3 4 Witchery(4 m Savabeel - Now the World) - Opie Bosson; freshened following a cosy win on 26 October in the Maiden 1200 metres at Pukekohe, with Bosson aboard, and squeezed early she looked good through the line when trialling over 935 metres on 8 January at Cambridge. Drawn barrier four in the $10,000 NZB Insurance Pearl Series Rating 65 1200 metres, she has what it takes to test this field.

3.07 p.m. R5 4 Golden Age(3 g Savabeel - La Belle Epoque) - Opie Bosson; showed his newness when debuting in the Maiden 1200 metres on 9 January at Matamata, finding the line once clear for a notable sixth. With the pedigree for longer distances, he should appreciate stepping up in the $10,000 Maiden 3YO 1400 metres and just requires luck to secure a reasonable trip from barrier 11.

4.22 p.m. R7 9 Jet Set(4 g Savabeel - Society Lady) - Shafiq Rusof; found the line from a long way back (12 lengths 600m) when debuting in the Maiden 1200 metres on 3 January at Te Aroha, running faster final sectionals (34.3) than the winner. Drawn barrier five, he appears ideally placed to improve further in the $10,000 Maiden 1400 metres.
