Te Akau Boxing Day Preview

Te Akau New Zealand has six horses racing on Boxing Day: Ellerslie, and Wingatui.

Weather: overcast, track: Dead5, rail: true.

12.30 p.m. R1 5 Swing Note  (5 m Encosta De Lago - Andallthatjazz) - Opie Bosson; showed continued improvement, third-up from a spell, with a solid effort for fourth here in the Rating 82 2200 metres on 7 December, and contests the $50,000 Rating 82 2200 metres. Winner of the Spring Classic (Listed, 2000m) last season at Riccarton, she rates a top four chance from barrier seven. Fixed odds: $7.00 & $2.40.

1.05 p.m. R2 6 Philipsburg  (2 g Per Incanto - Saint Martins) - Opie Bosson; recorded second and first, respectively, at the trials and debuts in the $50,000 2YO 1100 metres. His dam, Saint Martins (Darci Brahma), won twice to 1600 metres, from a strong international family including multiple stakes producing grand-dam Jeanetta Cochrane (Sadler's Wells). Fixed odds: $7.00 & $2.50.

2.15 p.m. R4 11 Folk Dress  (3 f Pierro - Gypsy Chimes) - Opie Bosson; not extended when third at the trials on 12 December at Te Aroha, and resumes in the $60,000 Shaw's Wires Ropes Uncle Remus Stakes (Listed, 1400m). She freshened after finishing third in the Barneswood Farm Stakes (Gr. 3, 1400m) in October at Ashburton, drawn barrier four and has the ability to measure up. Fixed odds: $21.00 & $4.00.

4.40 p.m. R8 2 Avantage  (4 m Fastnet Rock - Asavant) - Opie Bosson; spelled following a spring campaign in Sydney, she quickened appreciably to win a trial on 10 December at Avondale. A Champion Two-Year-Old and million dollar earner, she has a very good course record including victory in the Karaka Million (Restricted Listed, 1200m) and second in the Sistema Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m). Her class is unquestionable but luck is required from the outside gate (13) in the $60,000 Hallmark Stud Stakes (Listed, 1200m). Fixed odds: $4.60 & $1.75.

Weather: overcast, track: Slow7, rail: true. 5mls rain forecast race day.

1.16 p.m. R2 5 Burgundy Rose (3 f Burgundy - Paraiba) - Samantha Wynne; freshened after being beaten by a nose in the Rating 65 1200 metres on 2 November at Awapuni, and contests the $22,500 2YO & 3YO 1200 metres after galloping home strongly for third when trialling on 9 December at Riccarton. She annihilated her rivals by six lengths in the Maiden 3YO 1100 metres in October at Taupo, and warrants favouritism from barrier three. Fixed odds: $2.10 & $1.20.

2.27 p.m. R4 5 Summer Monsoon  (5 g Stratum - Princess Narine) - Jason Laking; has won two of his last three, most recently with a copybook victory in the Rating 72 1400 metres on 1 December at Cromwell. Between victories, he fought hard for second in the Rating 72 1400 metres on the first day of Cup Week (Nov. 9) at Riccarton. Up in grade and distance for the $30,000 Rating 82 1600 metres, he brings the right form to rate a top three chance. Fixed odds: $4.00 & $1.70.
