Te Akau Cambridge Trials' Report

Te Akau trialled horses at Cambridge Monday 6 May -

Weather: fine, track: Dead6, rail: true

Heat 2 2YO 800 metres (neck, 1 ¼ lengths 47.0)

Confectionery  (2f Per Incanto - Not A Jaffa)  - Opie Bosson; began well, steadied to settle fifth at the 600m and a touch green when clear in the straight she held her position in fifth.

Having her first trial for the Te Akau Jaffalicious Syndicate (Mgr: Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM), her dam is a half-sister to Hong Kong Horse of the Year Werther (Tavistock), both being out of Bagalollies (Zabeel).

Heat 3 2YO 800 metres (1 ¼ lengths, 1 length 46.6)

Rhapsody in Blue (2f Medaglia D'Oro - Kablues) - Chelsea Burdan; was caught wide before steadying for cover to seventh inside the 600m and she was good through the line after tracking up solidly near the rail.

Having her first trial for the Fortuna Rhapsody in Blue Syndicate (Mgr: John Galvin), her sire Medaglia d'Oro has sired 22 individual Group One winners, including the 2019 NZ Derby (Gr. 1, 2400m) winner.  She is from a terrific family on the dam side including Champion 3YO Filly in Australia Shamrocker (O'Reilly), winner of the Australian Derby (Gr. 1, 2400m) and VRC Australian Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m).

Heat 5 2YO 800 metres (6 ¼ lengths, 1 ½ lengths 46.9)

Uber Roca   (2f El Roca - Uberfrau) - Opie Bosson; positioned handily inner on a genuine clip and without urging she tracked the rail home for a solid third.

Having her first trial, it was a good performance given trial winner Minnallines (Ghibellines) had finished second at her race day debut to subsequent stakes' winner Rainbow Dash (Showcasing).

Heat 9 Maiden 800 metres (½ a length, 1 ½ lengths 46.1)

Cavort (4 m Burgundy - Trove) - Chelsea Burdan; was caught three wide at the back of five runners, carted wide as a horse inside her made the home turn awkwardly and while distant she worked through the line okay in fourth.

Te Akau trained her Merial Ancare Metric Mile (Gr. 3, 1600m) winning half-sister Thrive (Colombia), raced by breeder Ken Browne and David Ellis. The family appreciates give in the ground, so in training at the right time.

Heat 16 Open 935 metres (nose, 3 lengths 54.2)

Grand Ariana  (3f Snitzel-Enduja)  - Opie Bosson; settled back on a competitive pace, five lengths 600m, and remained back in the field.

A winner on debut for the Fortuna Grand Ariana Syndicate (Mgr: John Galvin), she is looking to recapture trial form before racing again.

Heat 19 Maiden 935 metres (1 length, short head 55.0)

3 f Rip Van Winkle - Surooh- Anna Jones; was caught wide in midfield and to her credit when wide in the straight she kept finding the line solidly. Her action looked good through the line.

In training for owner/breeder Kevin Hickman at Valachi Downs, she is a half-sister to promising Valachi staying mare Tantalising (Savabeel) who recorded back-to-back wins this season over 1600 metres before stepping up in class and distance.

Heat 20 Maiden 935 metres (short neck, 1 ½ lengths 55.0)

Jakkabella  (3f Jakkalberry-Jungle Pago) - Opie Bosson; was midfield in a compact field and not asked for too much in the straight.

In training for breeder Luigi Muollo (Explosive Bloodstock) who owns Novara Park in Cambridge, where Jakkalberry (Storming Home) stood. He won 12 races, stakes of $2.7m, and holds the record for the fastest last 600m (33.5) in a Melbourne Cup (Gr. 1, 3200m). Unfortunately, he died in February last year and this filly is from his first crop. Strong, consistent, and a high-class performer, Jakkalberry was a Champion in Italy (2010 and 2011), and Great Britain (2012).

Heat 24 Maiden 1200 metres (neck, 1 ½ lengths 1:14.0)

Tweet  (3f Burgundy-Trove) - Opie Bosson; began well from barrier one, handily placed on the inner and worked home solidly in the straight to finish just off the leading division. She was good through the line and just requires more give in the ground.

She is a half-sister to Thrive (Colombia) who won five races including the Merial Ancare Metric Mile (Gr. 3, 1600m). A mare that appreciated yielding ground.

Heat 25 Maiden 1470 metres (2 lengths, long neck 1:32.3)

So You Said  (3g So You Think-Spinnawitch)- Opie Bosson; began well to secure an economical trip midfield on the inner, five lengths 600m, and fought on to hold his position without really letting down on the going.

His sire, So You Think (High Chaparral) won 14 races, including 10 Group Ones and twice won the Cox Plate (Gr. 1, 2040m), for $8.8 million in prize money before retiring to Coolmore Stud.
